The Sandman Season 1 Episode 11 Recap

A little kitten meets a gray cat in the night, and both travel to hear the Siamese cat with what others only deign an amusing story. The Siamese cat told them a tale of grieving, how the humans she lived with had betrayed her affection and trust and killed her kittens. She dreamt of justice and revelation and found herself in the dreaming.

The brave cat traveled far in woods full of ghosts and the void that wipes away everything and finally got an audience with the King of Cats, The God of Dreams himself. She looked into his eyes and saw the truth about a time when cats reigned over humans, where they were the predators and the humans the prey.

But dreams shape the world, and humans dreamt of a world where from the beginning of time to its end, it would be humans who rule the cats.

When the King of Cats had shown her the age of cats, the Siamese cat understood one rule of how dreams have the power to change the world. If a thousand cats were to dream of their reign to come back again, just as humans did, they could bring order to the chaos humanity had brought to the world.

The little kitten seemed to be the only one to believe her message of the dream of a thousand cats and visits that dream in her sleep later.

The second part of the bonus episode introduces us to a struggling writer, Richard Maddoc, who makes a trade with a once-famous writer, Erasmus Fry. Maddoc trades a bezoar for Calliope, the youngest of the Nine Muses, who he needs to keep his writing career afloat. He promises to set her free if she does what she did for Fry and provides him with the divine inspiration he needs to write his book.

But Calliope insists he asked her after he sets her free, and he loses his patience and uses the force of the contract that keeps her prisoner and becomes a renowned author. Calliope prayed to the fates to help her, but they could only point her to the King of Dreams, one she had sworn never to speak to again.

Dream of a Thousand Cats/ Calliope

They had once been husband and wife, but after the death of their son Orpheus, they had parted on bad terms. But when Calliope learned Oneiros had escaped his century-long imprisonment, she prayed to him to come to save her too. Morpheus/Oneiros showed up and confronted Ric Maddoc to set Calliope free, but Maddoc insisted that since her ideas are what feeds his stories, he could not possibly give her up.

Morpheus granted Maddoc his dream of an infinite rove of ideas, which sent Maddoc tumbling to the edge of insanity. Maddoc sets Calliope free, and the Muse bids Morpheus farewell after asking him to free Maddoc from his living nightmare.
