Shang-Chi Director Works on Upcoming Live-Action Film of ‘Naruto’

Summary

  • ‘Naruto’ manga will inspire a live-action film adaptation.
  • Destin Daniel Cretton (known for Shang-Chi) will direct the film at Lionsgate.
  • However, compressing 700 manga chapters into a film will be challenging.

Live-action adaptations of anime are becoming increasingly popular and quite successful. They have the ability to attract a wider range of viewers. From ‘Death Note’ to ‘One Piece,’ several anime have already been adapted for the big screen.

The list of such adaptations continues to grow, and now another beloved anime franchise has been added to the list. After years of anticipation, the live-action film adaptation of ‘Naruto’ has finally been confirmed.

It was revealed that ‘Naruto’ manga will get a live-action film adaptation by Lionsgate. Destin Daniel Cretton (known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) will be the director.

The movie will be produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu under the banner of Arad Productions, with Jeremy Latcham as a producer. Cretton also supports the film and Jeyun Munford through his company, Hisako.

Cretton expressed his excitement and gratitude, stating that meeting Kishimoto in Tokyo and hearing his expansive vision for the film was a true honor. After watching one of his blockbuster action films, Kishimoto praised Cretton as the “perfect director” for the project and understood that his forte lies in creating solid dramas about people.

Kishimoto appreciated the director’s open-mindedness after meeting him in person. Cretton was willing to embrace the original material and collaborate with the manga writer on the live-action adaptation. He expressed excitement about the upcoming film, believing it would showcase spectacular action and profound drama.

Executing the idea may sound thrilling, but it will not be a cakewalk. Kishimoto’s manga comprises 700 chapters, leaving the creators to decide where to start and end the film.

Additionally, they must figure out how to seamlessly incorporate world-building, a vast array of characters, and multiple villains within the movie’s runtime. Accomplishing this task alone will be daunting, and modifications to the storyline will likely be necessary.

Despite these hurdles, the fact that Cretton is serving as director does give Naruto fans some reason to be hopeful. This optimism could go a long way in building hype around the live-action adaptation.

The success of the live-action will hinge largely on the performance of its cast and how well they are able to bring the original storyline to life. Nonetheless, we anticipate that the film will draw in both devoted fans and those who are new to the franchise from across the globe.
