Did Dazai Actually Die in Bungou Stray Dogs? What about Manga?

Bungo Stray Dogs season 5 had me on the edge of my seat as Dazai, the man who has defied death time and time again, appeared to be dead. I hoped he had another trick up his sleeve.

If you don’t know what happened, consider yourself lucky. Osamu Dazai was shot point-blank in the forehead by Chuuya in episode 10 of Bungo Stray Dogs season 5, an adaptation of chapter 109 of the manga.

1. Is Dazai Dead?

Yes, in Bungo Stray Dogs, Osamu Dazai appears to die in the manga. After season 5 episode 10, fans might have wondered if he’s really gone or if there’s hope for the future. Sadly, the anime has caught up with the manga, leaving fans curious. However, in episode 11, it’s revealed that Dazai is actually alive and fine. Chuuya activated his ability, saving Dazai, and the bullet didn’t go through his forehead.

2. Why did Chuuya Shoot Dazai?

In chapter 109, “In The Small Room, Part 5,” Dazai and Chuuya are face to face again. Still, Chuuya is under the influence of vampirism and obediently follows Fyodor’s orders like a puppet.

Fyodor orders him to finish Dazai, and without any hesitation, Chuuya shoots him in the right shoulder.

Then, there’s a moment of contact between Chuuya’s gun and Dazai’s forehead. Dazai pleads with Chuuya to come to his senses and says, “Our fate will not end in a place like this because you and I are destined to.”

Boom, Chuuya shoots him point-blank in the head and hits a few more shots.

3. How Did Dazai Survive?

Even though the protagonist is Atsushi Nakajima, Dazai Osamu has stolen the spotlight as the franchise star.

In episode 11 of Bungo Stray Dogs, titled ‘Twilight Goodbye,’ Fyodor is welcomed by Nikolai, who hands him the antidote.

Nikolai asks Fyodor, his source of communication within Mersault, in response to which, 3 vampire guards appear from the back, implying that they are his men.

Since Dazai hurt Fyodor’s hand in the previous episode, he asked one of the vampires to operate the helicopter. Fyodor then threatens to erase Nikolai for attempting to murder him. Nikolai accepts it as just another game.

However, before Fyodor can go in his chopper, one of the vampire guards stabs him. Dazai appears from Mersault uninjured, explaining that Chuuya wasn’t a vampire and he saved Dazai from falling through the elevator by manipulating gravity.

He also explained that Chuuya stopped the bullet from entering Dazai’s head, using his ability to make it seem like he killed him. Dazai then describes how he used the Vampire Guard to stab Fyodor using outside assistance.

He then commands the vampire guard to crash the helicopter, seemingly ending Fyodor once and for all, interpreted by his severed hand on the crash site.
