The Continental: Will the John Wick prequel be renewed for season 2?

The ending of The Continental season 1 teases the continuation of the story, although there is no official confirmation yet.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick on Peacock is a prequel to the popular John Wick movie series. It is set in the same universe as the John Wick series and explores the history of The New York Continental Hotel and its owner, Winston’s rise to power.

Winston is a recurring character in the John Wick films. In the film series, he is the sinister and dangerous owner of The New York Continental Hotel. The prequel series tells us how he rose to power in the 1970s, much before the events of the John Wick films.

The first season left us with many unanswered questions and a lot of scope for further exploration. Though it seemed like a limited series at first, it seems like there’s a lot more to the story than we know as of now.

But as of writing this piece, there is no official announcement confirmation about the making of The Continental season 2. Peacock has not greenlit a season 2 of the series yet.

1. Will The Continental be renewed for another season?

The Continental was originally supposed to be a standalone limited series. But if season 1 performs well and other factors work out, Peacock might renew it for another season. As of now, all of it is speculation, so we cannot say anything for sure.

The good news is that director Albert Hughes has mentioned in a couple of interviews that he is open to exploring the possibilities for a second season.

In an interview with GamesRadar , Hughes mentioned that he already has some ideas about season 2, but he has not heard anything from Peacock yet. Read his statement here:

“I would like to see if he becomes what he hated. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The red bird landing on the ledge with Cormac in episode 1, to then appearing in the penthouse with Winston during the finale, that’s symbolic – like a canary in a coal mine.” Hughes explained, before continuing with some key questions which, in the director’s mind, The Continental season 2 would need to answer. “Does the power go to his head? Does he then learn a lesson about wielding it with a benevolent hand instead of a dictatorial one, which Cormac did?”

In another interview with IGN, Hughes said that a potential season 2 could be set in the 1980s. Here’s the quote:

“Who knows whether I’m going to be invited back or Kirk’s going to be?” Hughes said when asked about the future of the John Wick spinoff, “Who knows? But we just geek out over the ’80s, and we actually have a plan for what would happen in the ’80s. So that’s exciting.”

2. The Continental Season 2 Potential Cast

Since we do not have enough information about the plot of season 2, it is difficult to determine who will return for The Continental season 2. Since Winston survives season 1, Colin Woodell will surely return as a young Winston for season 2.

The characters of The Adjudicator and Cormac die in season 1, so neither Mel Gibson nor Katie McGrath is expected to be a part of season 2. Cast members such as Mishel Prada as KD could return, but it completely depends on the plot.

If season 2 is set in the 1980s, the makers could introduce many new characters in the mix, such as a younger John Wick. As per the John Wick series, Wick was born in 1964. So, a prequel set in the 1980s could feature a younger John while he is first making his name as the hitman Baba Yaga.

3. The Continental Season 2 Plot

Currently, no concrete details are available about the plot of The Continental season 2. It is likely to begin after a time jump of a decade, as the director has mentioned it might be set in the 1980s. In other words, the story won’t pick up from season 1’s ending.

If we go by the season 1 finale, season 2 could explore the plot threads that were left untouched in season 1. For instance, it could explore why Lou’s father is an assassin, how he became one, Charlie’s whereabouts, and the consequences of Winston’s takeover of the hotel. The High Table will surely not be okay with Winston’s coup d’etat, so the conflict will continue in season 2.
