The final two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians promise to offer fans a lot of excitement and adrenaline rush. Episode 7 aired this week, where Percy, Annabeth, and Grover reached Hades’ kingdom in the Underworld.
In the previous episode, Percy realized that he missed the summer solstice deadline to return Zeus his lightning bolt. This is the first major change from the book, implying that the gods were already ready for war and time was limited to find the bolt.
Despite the time constraint, Percy put in all the work to bring the stolen lightning bolt back. In the latest episode, Percy reaches the Underworld and makes a crucial decision. The episode ends with hints of a duel between Percy and the God of War, Ares, to decide who finally gets Zeus’ lightning bolt and Hades’ Helm of Darkness.
Kronos is the Mastermind Behind the Gods’ Conflict
Percy Jackson episode 7 ends with the twist that Kronos, the Titan and father of the Gods, is the true conspirator behind the Gods’ conflict. Kronos orchestrated the plan to steal Zeus’s lightning bolt and Hades’ Helm of Darkness to encourage war between the gods.
In other words, Hades never stole Zeus’ bolt like the trio had assumed. Percy finds the bolt inside his bag when Groven is pulled into Tartarus. This also proves that Ares, the God of War, is involved in the conspiracy as Ares gives Percy the bag.
Kronos holds a grudge against Zeus for going against his wishes. As per Greek mythology, Zeus freed his brothers Poseidon and Hades from Kronos’ stomach after he ate them up. The brothers also imprisoned Kronos together.
Kronos wants to avenge his defeat and destroy the gods of Olympus by creating a rift between Zeus and Hades. He gets the lightning bolt and the Helm of Darkness stolen, so a war breaks out between the two brothers. A war between Zeus and Hades would destroy Olympus.
The introduction of Kronos in the plot changes the implications, as there is a bigger enemy to tackle for Percy. Kronos plays an even bigger and more important role in the third book in the series, Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse. We could see more of him if the series is renewed.
Hades Negotiates with Percy for Sally’s Freedom
Hades realizes that Kronos is behind the conspiracy and offers Percy a deal. He asks Percy to hand over the lightning bolt to him, as it could help him in case of a war. In return, he would offer Percy, his mother Sally, and Grover protection in the Underworld so Kronos would not target them.
However, Percy does not agree with Hades’s deal. Instead, he sticks to Hades’ previous offer: he could take back Sally from the Underworld by returning Hades’ stolen Helm of Darkness. The Helm was also stolen by Ares, who later confronts Percy.
Percy and Grover also reunite with Annabeth by using Poseidon’s Pearls. However, Ares once again confronts the trio, forcing Percy to use his Riptide. The episode ends with the promise of a major duel between Percy and Ares.
The stakes are high, as Percy must retrieve the Helm of Darkness from Ares and return it to Hades in order to stop war and bring his mother back safely. The season 1 finale will reveal the fate of Poseidon’s son.
