Who’s Procrustes? Percy’s Half-Brother in Percy Jackson Episode 7 Explained

Summary

  • Procrustes is a demigod and Percy’s half brother who stands in the way of the trio entering the Underworld in Episode 7.
  • Procrustes is based on a Greek mythological figure who’d offer resting beds to travelers and stretch or cut them to fit in the bed perfectly. This would ultimately kill them.

We are reaching the climax of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, and the iconic trio faces Procrustes, another son of Poseidon, in episode 7.

Throughout the entire season, the iconic trio has gone through a barrage of threats in the form of monsters and other mythical creatures. However, in episode 7, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover meet Proscrustes, another demigod and Percy’s half-brother!

Proscrustes guards the secret entrance to the Underworld, and the trio must see through his nasty tricks to enter Hades’ territory and save the world and Percy’s mother.

In this week’s episode, Proscrustes claims, “You’ve got dad’s eyes.”, as Percy enters the store.

Percy and his gang realize that Proscrustes (or Crusty) is called the murderer of travelers because his waterbeds are enchanted to trap whoever sits on them.

Crusty tries his best to make the three sit on his waterbeds, but Annabeth pushes Crusty into his own waterbed after donning the cap of invisibility.

The bed wraps around Crusty and enables the three to get out of his vicious clutches and look for the entrance to the Underworld.

Enraged, Proscrustes warns Percy that he’ll be unable to save his mother and that will not be the first time one fails to bring someone back from the Underworld.

Proscrustes is based on real-life Greek mythological characters like Medusa, Echidna, and Chimera.

In ancient tales, Proscrustes’ house was situated between Athens and Eleusis. He would offer a resting abode for the travelers. However, he had a cruel trick: lock them in an iron bed like the waterbeds in this week’s episode.

Proscrustes would then try to fit the guests perfectly in the bed. No guest ever fitted perfectly, so he’d stretch or cut off parts of guests until it was a perfect match.

Needless to say, most of them died in the process.

One of the major unanswered questions in Percy Jackson episode 7 is why Crusty is entrusted to guard the entrance of the Underworld.

Perhaps Hades doesn’t want anyone to find the opening of the Underworld so easily. Only dead people have the permission to enter the land of the dead.

Thus, having someone like Proscrustes as a guard would ensure that no one enters the Underworld without his permission.
