Superman & Lois Season 4: Release Date, Cast, Plot, and More

Superman & Lois Season 3 was great, but the final two episodes made it into the most remarkable season the series has done yet. Lex Luthor’s arrival right at the end of the Bruno Mannheim saga and Lois’ cancer battle was the perfect cherry on top of an entire season, and the chaos he brought set the stage for an epic Season 4.

With The CW in restructuring-related turmoil resulting from its purchase by Nexstar Media Group in 2022, much of its original programming ended up on the chopping block at the end of the 2022-2023 season. “Superman & Lois” managed to join several series that have escaped cancelation and earned a fourth season renewal.

Superman and Lois season 4 was confirmed in June 2023. However, it will have a less episodes i.e., only ten. This is not entirely unexpected, as The Flash season 9 also saw a reduced episode order, numbering only 13 episodes instead of its usual 23.

However, The Flash season 9 was renewed with the understanding that it would be the long-running series’ final season. There has been no confirmation from the series’ producers that Superman and Lois season 4 will be scripted as the show’s last season.

When will Superman & Lois Season 4 be released?

Determining when Season 4 of “Superman & Lois” will air is like organizing fish in a river. All of the action-drama series’ seasons have aired as part of The CW’s mid-season programming on Tuesdays at 8 p.m., but thus far, all three outings have begun and concluded in other months.

No official release date has been announced for Superman and Lois season 4. It is anticipated to be released sometime in early to mid-2024. This would fit the production cycle of previous years, where the show was filmed in the fall and winter in Vancouver and aired the following spring.

However, Superman and Lois season 4 could be delayed indefinitely if the Writers Guild of America strike continues into 2023 and the Screen Actors Guild joins the protest in solidarity.

Who will star in Superman & Lois Season 4?

There are significant changes in store in Superman and Lois season 4, with a reduced cast and a story centered upon a vengeful Lex Luthor. Superman and Lois season 3 focused on family matters, with Lois Lane battling breast cancer as Clark Kent tried to cope with his unfamiliar feelings of powerlessness.

Superman and Lois season 4 is expected to see a similar bent, if only because the show will not have as sizeable an ensemble as in previous seasons.

Seven members of the series’ ensemble were cut as series regulars. These cast members are Dylan Walsh (Sam Lane), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Lana Lang), Erik Valdez (Kyle Cushing), Inde Navarrette (Sarah Cortez), Wolé Parks (John Henry Irons), Tayler Buck (Natalie Irons) and Sofia Hasmik (Chrissy Beppo).

This leaves only the actors playing Superman, Lois Lane, their twin sons Jordan and Jonathan, and Lex Luthor on the show as series regulars for Superman and Lois season 4.

While the cut cast members were reportedly given the option to remain a part of the show as recurring characters or guest stars, at least one of them has opted not to return.

It has been confirmed that Dylan Walsh will not return as Sam Lane, via Instagram, with his wife, Leslie Bourque-Walsh, thanking fans for their support, but that “General Lane was cut due to budget.”

How many cut cast members will accept a reduced role and return for Superman and Lois season 4 is uncertain.

Superman & Lois Season 4 Plot

The most obvious plot point for Season 4 is the conflict between Superman and the Inverse Superman-turned-Doomsday. Little has been revealed about the story of Superman and Lois season 4 beyond the fact that Lex Luthor will be the chief villain.

Played by Michael Cudlitz, Luthor appeared in the penultimate episode of Superman and Lois season 3 as he was released from prison.

Far from being grateful to Lois Lane for proving he was framed, Luthor cared only that Lois’s reporting ruined his reputation years earlier. He told Lois he never wanted her to write again, implying he would turn to violence if she did not retire willingly. Luthor also told Lois to tell Superman that he was following.

Ultimately, Season 3 ends on an intense note: Superman and Inverse Superman battling it out on the moon. This will keep fans invested until the new season airs and sets Season 4 up for an explosive beginning. The fallout from this battle will doubtlessly play a significant role in future episodes, as well Luthor’s larger quest for vengeance.

Like Jordan and Jonathan’s complex experiences with their superpowers and social lives, Lois’ cancer battle will continue. As for Clark, we expect to see him survive his moon-bound battle and continue to fight the world’s evils with his family’s help. The shake-ups at The CW will certainly impact Season 4, though we can’t yet say how.

Who is the showrunner for Superman & Lois Season 4?

We don’t know how the show’s shake-up will affect Season 4’s writing, production, or directing processes. The CW has not announced a showrunner for Season 4 at this time. Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher ran the show during its first three seasons, and while they’re probably likely to continue in that role, we can’t say for sure, especially since “Superman & Lois” has been subject to so much change as of late.

Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns join Fletcher, Helbing, and Berlanti as executive producers. There is no further word as to who, if anyone, will be leaving the production team. There have also been no new or returning directors or writers announced for Season 4 of “Superman & Lois” just yet.
