Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning: Ranking the Perfect Bathroom Breaks

Watch enough movies, and you’ll inevitably encounter one of the medium’s funniest quirks. Depending on how skilled a particular filmmaker is at managing pacing and rhythm, 3-hour-long epics can go by in a breeze while what should’ve been a fun, 90-minute breeze can feel like it takes several hours to slog through.

Runtimes, as every avid moviegoer must learn eventually, mean nothing compared to the experience of making your way through every scene. You can chalk this up to many different aspects of filmmaking, but it ultimately comes down to the magic of editing.

There are no clear-cut “perfect” times for bathroom breaks in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, as the movie is action-packed, and there are few lulls in the action. However, a few moments may be less disruptive to the viewing experience if you need to use the restroom.

The 11-minute mark: This is an excellent time to take a break if you’re feeling antsy, as the movie is just getting started, and there’s not much significant plot development happening yet.

The 45-minute mark: This is another good option, as there’s a brief scene where the characters drive in a car. This is a relatively quiet scene, so you’re less likely to miss anything important if you step out for a few minutes.

The 1-hour and 20-minute mark: This is the end of the movie’s first act, so it’s a natural break point. There’s a brief scene where the characters are talking in a restaurant, so this is an excellent time to use the restroom without missing anything important.

1 hour and 55 minutes: The characters are on a plane, so this is another quiet scene where you can take a break.

The 2-hour and 15-minute mark: This is the end of the movie’s second act, so it’s another natural break point. There’s a scene where the characters are on a plane, so this is an excellent time to use the restroom without missing anything important.

2 hours and 35 minutes: The movie ends with a big action scene, so this is an excellent time to go for a bathroom break during the initial moments of the action scene to make sure you don’t miss the amazing stunts that will follow.

I found six decent Bathroom Breaks in this action/plot-heavy movie. It wasn’t easy. I recommend the 3rd Bathroom Break.

Of course, these are suggestions, and you may need to use the restroom at other times during the movie.

Editor Eddie Hamilton, who has worked on the franchise ever since 2015’s “Rogue Nation” had his views on bathroom breaks:

“In a dialogue scene or an action scene, you’re always trying to make sure that the emotional intention of the scene is clear for the audience and that they give a s**t about what’s happening. I think that the real trick is, if we’ve done our job right, if I’ve done my job right as an editor, everything is paced so that you are constantly leaning in, and you never even think, ‘Is this the right time to go and pee?'”
