One Piece: Will Chopper make the cure for the Ice Oni virus in time?

Things are getting truly icy for Chopper and the rest battling on the Live Floor of the Skull Dome.

Ever since Lead Performer/All-Star Queen the Plague unleashed his Ice Oni virus in episode 1005, we’ve been waiting to see how Chopper will overcome it.

If anything can stop a virus, it’s the Straw Hat doctor’s medical expertise. In episode 1022, Chopper finishes creating an antidote – literally mid-battle – but has to test it first before administering it on the people infected.

Hyogoro has completely transformed into an Oni and is attacking the Yakuza, while more and more soldiers are being turned into ice zombies. Will Chopper’s medicine be ready in time to save them all?

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from One Piece.

Chopper successfully makes, tests, and mass-produces the cure for Queen’s Ice Oni virus in the nick of time and saves everyone, according to chapter 1007. The infected Pleasures and Waiters, the samurai, and Hyogoro are all reverted to their original forms.

In episode 1023 we will see how Chopper will defeat Queen’s ice plague and transfer his self-created countervirus to help all the infected people recover back to normal.

How does Chopper Create the Antidote?

Chopper uses Queen’s liquid antibodies to create his own virus that will act as an antidote to the Ice Oni. He calls this artificial countervirus the Chopperphage, which can be spread through air and stored in weapons.

Initially, Chopper had hoped to use the vial of antibodies Zoro had secured from Apoo to save those infected. But since there were too many people and too little antibodies, he quickly made the decision to use what he had to create something new.

Only Chopper could have thought of making an actual virus while being infected and actively attacked himself.

He takes merely one single hour to make the benign Chopperphage and then tests it on himself before attempting to cure others.

How does Chopper cure the people infected with Ice Oni?

Chopper multiplies the liquid antibodies to make the gaseous countervirus Chopperphage which he loads into a cannon. Miyagi and Tristan fire the cannon and the antidote is disseminated throughout the room, collectively curing allies, enemies, and himself.

Since the Chopperphage takes the form of mist, it doesn’t need physical contact like the Ice Oni virus to spread. The Chopperphage Nebulizer is fired and the cloud of gas takes the form of Chopper’s face, before spreading and being inhaled by the infected and non-infected people alike.

The countervirus has no effect on non-infected people like Zoro, but it completely heals infected people like Hyogoro who was on the brink of death.

It heats up the frozen areas of the body and kills the chilling virus, eliminating it completely in the matter of a few seconds.

The countervirus not only thaws frozen bodies but also reverses the virus’ effect on the infected people’s brains. After the cannon is fired, everyone who had been infected also comes back to their senses; not just that, some of them even gain more sense that before.

The Beasts Pirates subordinates who had been betrayed by their commanding officer Queen, switch their alliances and become Team Chopper.

When Queen is butt-hurt about being outsmarted by a ship doctor, the Pleasures form a human shield to protect Chopper, saying they would rather die for their savior than for the person who wanted them zombified.

What would happen if Chopper didn’t make the Treatment on Time?

Had Chopper not figured out a solution on time, everyone fighting on the Live Floor of the Skull Dome – and probably beyond – would have been turned into Ice Onis.

This includes the enemies, i.e., the Beasts Pirates subordinates and Apoo, the Yakuza bosses and the samurai, the Minks, other allies like X Drake, and Straw Hat members like Robin, Zoro, and Chopper.

Of course, Marco arrived in time to use his blue flames to heat out the virus from the majority, but even then, the effects of the virus could only fully be stopped by Chopper’s medicine.

Oda really used the Ice Oni situation to give Chopper his moment to shine – our favorite racoon – sorry, reindeer – not only recognizes the structure and behavior of Queen’s virulent virus, but also figures out a way to mass produce it, saving hundreds of people.

The Chopperphage might not be the universal cure that Chopper has been dreaming of making, but it is exactly what the Alliance needed in that moment. Without it, Queen and his ice plague would have taken over the dome.

This is Chopper’s biggest flex till date – apart from Monster Point, which he will unleash in the next episode.
