Is Garp going to die at Hachinosu? Marineford 2.0 Confirmed

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from One Piece Manga Spoilers.

With the release of One Piece Chapter 1088 titled ‘Last Lesson,’ the story is getting even more interesting as it could lead to a potential war with the Blackbeard Pirates – a Marineford 2.0 if you will.

I know you came here to know if Garp will survive and here I’m discussing the possibilities of war. Don’t worry, I’ll explain. First, let’s get the facts straight.

The chapter ends with the narrator stating “Legendary Hero Garp” disappeared at Hachinosu. Fate: Unknown”.

Garp is surrounded by Blackbeard pirates and starts to freeze. While he’s in a dire state, Oda’s “fate unknown” message gives him a MIA status rather than dead in action.

Monkey D. Garp, aka “Hero of the Marines, will not die at Hachinosu because a character as prominent as Garp can’t be written off without good reason. Instead, he’ll be saved by the joint forces of Luffy and Koby in a war against Blackbeard Pirates.

1. Why do I think there’ll be a war at Hachinosu?

1. Marineford 2.0: Luffy’s Redemption Arc

Marineford 2.0 will be Luffy’s redemption arc, as he will be given a chance again to save a member of his family.

At Marineford, our MC was devastated by his sworn brother, Ace’s death. He had failed to salvage his life, despite the best of efforts.

On the contrary, Ace sacrificed himself to protect Luffy from Akainu’s lethal magma attack. This had a massive impact on Mugiwara’s character development.

However, it does seem like he’ll be given another chance. This time, he’ll have to save his grandfather, Garp. It’ll also help close the Ace’s storyline if Luffy defeats Blackbeard – the man who was the precursor to Ace’s execution.

2. Blackbeard’s Parallels with Rocks

In many ways, Teach can be considered a successor to the original menacing evil – Rocks D. Xebec. You could argue that they aren’t biologically related, but so is the case with Luffy and Roger.

Here are some parallels between the two:

  • Just like Rocks, Blackbeard is thirsty for power and seeks to become the next pirate king. Both of their powers and ultimate goals have always been shrouded in mystery.

  • The Rocks Pirates were founded at Hachinosu Island, which is the current base of Blackbeard Pirates.

  •  Blackbeard’s ship is called The Saber of Xebec.

3. Luffy’s Parallels with Roger & Garp

Luffy’s fight this time also has several parallels with Roger & Garp’s fight. In the One Piece lore, the would-be Pirate King Gol D. Roger partnered with Garp “The Fist” to resolve the God Valley incident.

After Rocks attacked a bunch of saints, Roger and Garp raided Hachinosu to defeat the enigmatic pirate – Rocks D. Xebec.

From what I can see, Luffy is going to do something similar. Strawhat Pirates will make a temporary alliance with Marines (or more specifically SWORD unit of Marines) to defeat Blackbeard and rescue Garp.

This might sound silly, but I believe Luffy must first accomplish the feats Roger did before he can even think of surpassing the former Pirate King. So, before overthrowing the government, Luffy has to defeat Rocks of his generation and reach One Piece.

2. Is there a chance Garp might die?

Unfortunately, there’s a very minor chance that Garp might die since we can’t always be certain what Eiichiro Oda has planned. There are some parallels between Hachinosu Garp and Marineford Newgate that indicate the worst.

1. To start off, the cover page features Ace lighting a Capybara Cigar. Akainu also loved to smoke cigars, a small detail, but it’s worth counting.

2. Whitebeard and Garp took their ships to the respective islands to protect something they cared about the most. Ace in Whitebeard’s case and Koby in Garp’s case.

3. During the Paramount War, Whitebeard, a legendary pirate far past his prime, ventures toward an island teeming with marines, to rescue a young, up-and-coming pirate whom he views as his own son.

Similarly, Garp, a legendary Marine far past his prime ventures towards an island teeming with pirates to rescue a young, up-and-coming marine.

4. Teach captured Ace and handed him to marines for the Shichibukai title, this led to Whitebeard coming out of retirement. Similarly, Garp is now forced to jump into battle because Blackbeard captured Koby to force WG recognize his authority as the ruler of Blackbeard Kingdom.

5. At Marineford, it was Whitebeard (a morally right pirate) vs. Akainu (a morally corrupt marine). In that fight, he suffered severe heat burns from Akainu’s magma. Also, Blackbeard, his former subordinate, betrayed and killed him when his injuries weakened him.

Presently, at Hachinosu, it will be Garp vs. Blackbeard – the complete opposite. And Garp’s former protege, Aokiji, has stabbed him with his ice sword.

6. At Marineford, Whitebeard destroyed most of the island, died protecting what he loved the most, and entrusted a new era to Luffy.

At Hachinosu, Garp destroyed most of the island to protect what he loves the most, and hand the new era to Koby.

Oda’s really messing with our brains now, isn’t he?

3. About One Piece

One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 22, 1997.

The man who had acquired everything in this world, the Pirate King, is Gol D. Roger. The final words he said at the execution tower were “My treasures? If you want it, I’ll let you have it. Look for it; I left all of it at that place.” These words sent many to the seas, chasing their dreams, headed toward the Grand Line, in search of One Piece. Thus began a new age!

Seeking to be the greatest pirate in the world, young Monkey D. Luffy also heads toward the Grand Line in search of One Piece. His diverse crew is joining him along the way, consisting of a swordsman, marksman, navigator, cook, doctor, archaeologist, and cyborg-shipwright, this will be one memorable adventure.
