1. SAO Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night Release Date
I was super hyped for the release of the movie Scherzo of Deep Night. But then, as we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic struck Japan, and the movie’s release got delayed.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, the limited theatrical release is now over in most countries, leaving us fans in despair.
Sword Art Online: Progressive 2 – Scherzo of Deep Night was initially scheduled for a full theatrical release on September 10. It was eventually released in America on February 3, 2023, after being delayed.
The movie was supposed to have an advance screening on August 24, 2022, but the release date got pushed back to October 22 in Japan.
Aria of a Starless Night had a similar situation when it came out in US theaters in December 2021; we had to wait until Thanksgiving 2022 for the dub and for it to be available on Crunchyroll.
So, it looks like we might have to wait until May or later for the new movie. But hey, good things come to those who wait, right?
2. The Plot of SAO Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night
If you’re new to the Sword Art Online series, the movie Scherzo of Deep Night might leave you feeling a bit lost. It’s definitely made for die-hard fans who know the ins and outs of the game world.
The movie kicks off with two rival guilds banding together to take down a challenging level four boss. It’s everything you’d expect from a virtual reality game: teamwork, loot, and lots of action.
The plot of SAO Progressive Scherzo of Deep Night revolves around Asuna and Kirito as they journey toward the game’s fifth level, gathering allies to battle a monster. However, they become caught up in a conflict between two guilds.
Kirito and Asuna, the series’ central duo, are already established as a great team, which is a nice change of pace from the usual “will they or won’t they” romantic plotlines.
When Asuna stumbles upon an enemy to wipe out a guild on level five, they jump into action to stop it. There are a lot of classic heroics, a big boss battle, and the ever-present threat of death in the virtual world.
And if you’re a big SAO fan, you’ll be happy to hear that there’s even a hint of more adventures to come.
3. Quick Recap: SAO Progressive Movie 1 – Aria of a Starless Night
SAO Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night came out in 2021. It retells the Aincrad Arc from Asuna’s point of view, which is pretty cool.
You get to see how she struggled initially with her school friend Mito and how she met Kirito for the first time. Asuna wasn’t as experienced as she seemed, but Mito, being a beta tester, helped her level up quickly and come to terms with her situation.
SAO Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night follows the story of Asuna, a high school student who teams up with a young swordsman to survive inside the game. However, if their HP drops to zero, their brain will be destroyed in real life.
The movie starts with the rising death toll in Kayaba Akihiko’s Sword Art Online game, and two thousand players have already died.
Asuna is a total badass and dispatches powerful monsters with a single rapier that flashes like a shooting star at night. But, as Kirito says, “There’s no way to beat this game. The only difference is when and where you die.”

Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night is the sequel to the Sword Art Online -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night anime film. It is the second part of the Sword Art Online franchise’s -Progressive- film series.
The film adapts the novel’s Aincrad arc in more detail with extra footage and content. Scherzo of a Deep Night is set in Aincrad’s dangerous fifth floor that Kirito and his gang have to clear.
Two Major guilds – The Aincrad Liberation Squad and the Dragon Knights Brigade enter into a conflict that engulfs Kirito and Asuna. Elsewhere, a mysterious figure is pulling the strings.
