Betrayal or Sacrifice: Why Did Baji Leave Toman?

Tokyo Revengers is one of the anime that has outdone itself in creating characters that can touch your heart. If Draken is a man with a heart of gold, then Keisuke Baji is the hero of the shadows.

If we need to sum up Baji, we can say, he is the ideals of Toman, personified. He is a wild soul, who generally does everything based on what he feels like. He always has a grin while fighting and is fiercely loyal to his friends and Toman.

It was quite shocking to see Baji leave Toman and join Valhalla leaving his position as the leader of 1st division. So, why exactly did Baji leave, was he a defector or a hero? Let’s find out!

Baji leaves Toman and joins Valhalla to get information on Kisaki. He believes that Kisaki is bad news as he overhears Kisaki proposing to bring Pah chin if Mikey can make him the captain of the 3rd division.

1. Why did Baji join Valhalla?

Chapter 38 of the manga series took us by surprise. Kisaki was named the leader of the 3rd division taking the position of Pah-chin and Keisuke Baji shows up and announces his decision to leave Toman to join Valhalla.

However, joining Valhalla was not an easy task to do. Baji has to give tests of loyalty to prove himself to Valhalla. He even had to beat up Chifuyu who was one of his closest friends.

Later on, it was revealed that Baji left Toman to infiltrate Valhalla and find more information about Kisaki. He happened to overhear Kisaki proposing to get Pah-chin out of jail in exchange for making him the captain of the 3rd squad. Baji quickly realised that Kisaki was bad news and wanted to stop his plans from succeeding.

2. Kisaki’s Secret Plan!

During the fight between Valhalla and Toman, the entire gang of Valhalla charges at defenceless Mikey. Before a member of Valhalla can take down Mikey, Kisaki stops his blow mid-day.

He immediately declares that the third division will protect its leader at all costs. This is the point where Kisaki’s plans become clear. Takemichi soon realises that the outcome of the battle doesn’t matter to Kisaki.

Whatever may be the outcome of the battle between Valhalla and Toman, it would still benefit Kisaki, if Valhalla wins, he could just take over Toman and if Toman wins, he would be considered a hero. It’s a win-win situation for Kisaki.

3. Toman’s Secret Hero Goes Down!

Baji attacks Kisaki and bashes his head with a pipe. However, amid these events, we see Baji getting stabbed by Kazutora. He tells everyone that it was just a scratch and nothing to worry about.

He then dashes in with his signature grin taking down 50 members of squad 3. However, before he could take down Kisaki his injury acts up and he collapses.

Seeing Baji collapse, Mikey is now ready to kill Kazutora and attacks him. Takemichi is powerless and is dreadful about the future repeating itself. However, Baji stands up and stabs himself.

Baji tells everyone that Kazutora was not the one who killed him but he killed himself. Even on the verge of his death, he tells Takemichi that he considers the six founding members his treasure and asks Takemichi to take care of Mikey.

At the end of Bloody Halloween, Toman’s secret hero. died in the arms of Chifuyu after thanking him for everything. His demise was absolutely heart-wrenching and had a deep impact on his fans.

4. Does Takemichi save Baji?

Takemichi and Mikey return to a time when they were just children and manage to change the course of events that were going to transpire, saving everyone including Baji.

In Chapter 278 of the manga, we can see that everyone is alive and well, including Baji. They are seen celebrating Takemichi and Hina’s wedding. Turns out, Baji is a veterinary student. Chifuyu is seen teasing him.
