Monster anime is a work of fiction created by Naoki Urasawa. The original idea for the anime came from the 1960s American television series titled, The Fugitive.

This series had a huge impact on Urasawa who saw it at the age of eight. ‘The Fugitive’ is a story of the doctor who was wrongfully convicted of murder, but escapes and searches for the real killer while being on a run.

The Japanese medical industry was very strongly influenced by the German professional practices which is the main reason for the author to set Monster in Germany. It also allowed him to include the neo-Nazi movement in the story!
