Sasuke is one of the best anti-villains in the Naruto series and Boruto was kind of his redemption arc. However, the old guards eventually have to get nerfed when the new generation shows up. And that’s exactly what happened in Boruto anime. Sasuke lost his Rinnegan.
While Sasuke put up a brave face and reassured Boruto that it was all okay, we can unanimously agree that this was a huge loss for Sasuke! This brings us to the next question! Will he ever regain his Rinnegan and if so, how?
In episode 218, titled Partner, Sasuke lost his Rinnegan when Momoshiki-controlled Boruto stabbed his eye with a kunai. He lost all Rinnegan abilities, such as space-time ninjutsu, planetary devastation, and chakra absorption.
Is Sasuke’s Rinnegan lost forever?
Sasuke will likely never regain his Rinnegan. From a story prespective, the focus needs to be shifted to Boruto and gang, sadly, Sharingan is all Sasuke has now. Nor will Naruto get another tailed beast for that matter.
That said, the story does necessitate it at this point. Since Naruto is also locked in Daikokuten, Sasuke’s Rinnegan powers might be the key to saving Naruto.
So, if he were to get his powers back, how would that play out? I have two theories.
Theory #1: He Never Lost It
According to a major theory, Sasuke doesn’t need to get his Rinnegan back anymore.
To explain, all the powers and abilities of the Uchiha clan come from their blood, which is why they are termed “Kekkei Genkai”. The eyes are a medium to access this power and losing them does not directly correlate to losing all the powers!
In this case, Sasuke has all the abilities of Rinnegan within him since he’s the direct descendant of Indra and thus Hagoromo; he just needs a tool to access it.
With the help of scientific prodigy Amado, the excellent healer Sakura, and the Uchiha anatomy expert Orochimaru, Sasuke can create an artificial Rinnegan.
Theory #2: Naruto Has Hagoromo Genes Too
The second theory considers Naruto’s Ashura powers.
As we know, in his Ashura mode, Naruto can heal anything he wants to, with just a touch! He was able to heal Kakashi’s eye as well. Many fans assume he can do the same with Sasuke’s Rinnegan!
However, this looks unlikely since Naruto is now in the other world of Daikokuten. And he can’t do anything at this point and instead needs saving!
Is Sasuke weaker after losing his Rinnegan?
Sasuke is far from his prime after losing Rinngena as he lost most of his godly powers. He doesn’t have access to techniques like space-time ninjutsu, planetary devastation, and chakra absorption anymore.
His Rinnegan allowed Sasuke to manipulate space and time, which essentially allowed him to teleport to any point and negate any barriers. His ability, Amenotejikara, helps him to switch the position of any object.
This ability also grants him the ability to perform un-blockable offense. Along with these abilities, Rinnegan gives Sasuke the power of Six Paths. With all of these abilities lost, his power levels have come down by a lot.
Here’s the list of all the major abilities that Sasuke lost:
- Space-Time Ninjutsu
- Amenotejikara
- Six Paths of Pain
- Rinnegan Genjutsu
Losing Rinnegan Is Good for Sasuke
If Sasuke’s Rinnegan powers are lost forever, this may go in any direction.
Let’s face it, Sasuke has not been the ultimate badass he used to be before Rinnegan. Sasuke Uchiha was a strategist who planned ten steps ahead of his opponents. He defeated Orochimaru. OROCHIMARU!!!
Lately, however, he has been getting caught off guard literally since the beginning of the Boruto manga, first with Kinishiki and now with Borushiki.
Additionally, the not-so-bratty-anymore Uchiha has always been low on chakra reserves ever since he got his Rinnegan.
Maybe this will be his way to improve and become a better fighter!
Sasuke Might Still Have His Powers
However, we cannot rule out the possibility that losing Rinnegan doesn’t necessarily mean that he can’t use the powers of this eye. As discussed previously, he might still have access to some of the Rinnegan abilities.
This was seen in the case of Madara Uchiha, who could access some powers of the Rinnegan, such as chakra absorption and even Limbo without having the eyes.
Similarly, Sasuke might also have access to a few of his abilities or maybe all of them, although the level of techniques would be decreased.
Additionally, he still has the abilities of Sharingan and Mangyeko Sharingan. And we cannot underestimate those abilities and his ninjutsu is still pretty strong as well.
Why Sasuke should never have lost his Rinnegan?
Okay, listen to me, I know I’m a die-hard Naruto fan but I’m not here to berate Borutor’s overall “existence.” As much as I dislike my childhood hero being replaced, if it’s going to happen, I completely agree that Naruto and Sasuke needed to be nerfed.
BUT the way it happened was so incredibly stupid that it’s infuriating. I mean, come on, the guy has the Sharingan, which already grants him some incredible abilities like spatial awareness and enemy analysis.
And we’ve seen him use those skills since his childhood, predicting movements and seeing through his opponents’ chakra. Plus, he’s upgraded to the Mangekyou Sharingan and even reached the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan, which is like two levels above a regular Sharingan.
With all that power, you’d think he could spot a kunai coming from a mile away, right?
It does seem pretty ridiculous that the writers expect us to believe Sasuke could lose his Rinnegan like that. I mean, his visual prowess should have made him practically untouchable. It’s like they’re ignoring all the training and experience he’s had over the years.
