The Story of Pan in the Percy Jackson Books Explained: Does Grover find Pan?

Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 concluded a while ago. Amidst all the excitement, the series was quickly renewed for season 2. Following Rick Riordan’s book series, season 2 will focus on the second book, Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters.

In season 1 itself, the series teased many future storylines, including Grover Underwood’s quest to find Pan, the Greek God of the wild, shepherds, and mystics. The Sea of Monsters focuses on Grover’s quest to search for Pan.

Grover’s storyline was set up in The Lightning Thief (Book 1 in the Percy Jackson series) as well, so the Disney+ series follows suit. If you’ve read the books, you’re already familiar with Pan’s story. However, if you’re not and want to freshen your memory before season 2, you’re at the right place.

In season 1, episode 4, Grover revealed that his goal was to become a Searcher and join other satyrs like him to find the God of the Wild. As per the legend, Pan has been missing for centuries, and many satyrs, including Grover’s father and Uncle Ferdinand, have gone out to find him.

Grover wishes to join them and is working on his role as Percy’s Protector to obtain a searcher’s license from the Council of Cloven Elders. As per the books, Grover will get the opportunity in Sea of Monsters.

What happened to Pan in the Percy Jackson books?

As per the legend, Pan suddenly disappeared from everyone’s sight almost 2000 years before the events of Percy Jackson. He left a message with the Greek God, Lysas, that he died. Pan shared a special bond with satyrs and other creatures of nature, who refused to believe his tragic story.

Pan was upset by the damage humanity caused to nature and his kingdoms of the wild. He disappeared from everyone’s sight to deal with this tragedy and never wanted to be found.

However, satyrs and other creatures of nature never gave up looking for him. They have been looking for Pan all over the world for the last 2000 years. The spirits want to bring him back to stop humanity from further destroying nature and undo the damage already done.

Is Pan still alive in Percy Jackson?

The books do not reveal whether Pan is dead or alive until the fourth book, The Battle of the Labyrinth. The fourth book reveals that Pan is still alive because of the satyrs’ search for him. Once the world forgets about him, he could fade away. However, the spirits of nature continue to remember him, so he cannot die.

Grover and the other satyrs keep looking for Pan throughout the second, third, and fourth books. However, they cannot find him until The Battle of the Labyrinth, when Grover finds him.

As per the books, Pan’s goal was to make everyone believe he’s dead so they can forget about him. Once the world forgets about his existence, he could fade away and die for real. However, even when the world as a whole believes his story, the spirits of nature do not believe him and continue their search.

By the time Grover finds Pan, he is still alive, although barely.

What happens after Grover finds Pan?

At the end of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Grover gets a searcher’s license from the Council of Cloven Elders for fulfilling his duties as a protector during the quest to the Underworld.

Grover immediately goes off on his quest to look for Pan. In the second book, Percy has a dream about his friend being attacked by a monster and him asking for his help. Therefore, Percy, Annabeth, and Percy’s half-brother, Tyson, go off to look for Grover.

The trio finally discovers Grover on an island that belongs to the Cyclops Polyphemus. Grover got stuck on the island as the Golden Fleece was there, and it gave off a deceiving scent of the wild.

In the third book, The Titan’s Curse, Grover resumes his quest to find Pan again. However, he has no luck. Once in New Mexico, he felt Pan’s presence and believed Pan told him, “I await you.”

In the fourth book, The Battle of the Labyrinth, Grover finally finds Pan during their quest to find Daedalus in the labyrinth. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover find the God of the Wild in the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.

When they find him, Pan is almost on the verge of death. However, he passes a message to Grover and leaves some of his spirit inside him, leading him to gain some of his powers. He then fades into oblivion.
