Sex Education S4 Teaser Promises More Drama, Laughs and Lessons in Sex

Netflix has unveiled the first teaser for the fourth and final season of its popular teen drama, Sex Education. The teaser also reveals that the final season will premiere on the platform on September 21, 2023.

Sex Education is one of the most popular shows on Netflix and follows the story of Otis Milburn, a high-school student whose mother is a sex therapist. In the first season, Otis collaborates with his classmate, Maeve, to run an unofficial sex education platform where he advises other school students in exchange for money.

In subsequent seasons, the show focused on various other aspects and gave equal importance to other characters such as Eric, Ruby, Ola, Jackson, Aimee, and Adam. The series has received critical acclaim for its depiction of inclusivity and spreading awareness about the importance of sex education.

The third season premiered in 2021, and the series was quickly renewed for season 4. However, season 4 will be the show’s final season, as shown in the teaser and announced by its cast members.

Netflix has officially released the first teaser for Sex Education season 4, featuring various cast members. The students are back at Moordale High for another school year, and we’ve quite a few new additions to the cast as well. Watch the teaser here –

1. Otis is Officially A Sex Therapist

In the teaser, we finally see Otis officially calling himself a sex therapist in front of his new school. Until now, Otis secretly helped the students of Moordale as a secret therapist. However, he is finally ready to come out publicly with his intentions.

We also see Jean Milburn, Otis’ mother having a hard time with her newborn. Maybe Otis can help her in her job or take over temporarily until she’s back on track.

In other words, the series will continue to hold on to its much-needed stance regarding sex positivity and the importance of sex education. It will be interesting to see how the story ends for Otis. Perhaps, he could take up sex education in university and become a professional sex therapist.

2. Eric and Maeve are Back for the Final Season

The teaser also confirms that Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Maeve (Emma Mackey), who were rumored to have left the series, will return for a final season. Maeve might not have a role as prominent as she did in the previous seasons, but she’ll still be in the show.

Emma Mackey did not specify any reasons behind her departure from Sex Education. The actor confirmed that she will not make an appearance in season 5 after completing filming for season 4.

Previously, Gatwa also revealed that he would not return as Eric in Sex Education beyond season 4. The actor left the show ahead of his Doctor Who debut, most likely to focus on other projects.

The makers may have decided to end the series in good time as many cast members were about to leave. Without the presence of popular characters like Eric and Maeve, the show could have lost its popularity.

It is a good decision for the makers to end the series in due time, with the original cast members still being a part of the series.

3. The Otis-Ruby-Maeve Triangle

We also see a glimpse of Otis and Ruby together, which teases that the two might rekindle their relationship. The love triangle between Maeve, Otis, and Ruby was a huge part of season 3 and might continue this season. We’re all waiting to find out who Otis ends up with – Maeve or Ruby.

Given that Maeve has a less prominent role in season 4 and she has already left Moordale for the US, there’s a chance that Maeve and Otis may not end up together

Meanwhile, Ruby has been in love with Otis since their sexual partnership in season 3. They have also been good friends, so they could end up together. From season 3, we know Maeve is more inclined to focus on her academics and career as of now, so Ruby and Otis are the more realistic endgame here.

However, I hope Maeve-Otis fans like me don’t lose hope! We never know what the makers have in store for us, given the massive popularity of Maeve and Otis, particularly Maeve as a character.

4. David Levy Joins the Sex Education Cast

The teaser also features a glimpse of David Levy, known for playing David Rose in the award-winning sitcom Schitts Creek. A few months ago, it was revealed that he would be joining the Sex Education cast in season 4.

As per reports, Levy will portray Thomas Molloy, a popular author and Maeve’s tutor at Wallace University. At the end of season 3, Maeve moved to the US on a scholarship to study at Wallace University. It seems like Levy’s character will be Maeve’s mentor at the university.

5. The Future of Moordale High: New School?

In the last season, Otis and his friends successfully managed to get rid of Hope Haddon, the new head teacher who replaced Headmaster Groff. Haddon changed various rules in the school, most of which were non-inclusive and not LGBTQIA-friendly.

The school was doomed to close at the end of season 3. So, season 4 is expected to address what happens to Moordale after the fiasco. But from the teaser, it seems like the Moordale secondary team are now in another school, where Otis publicly calls himself a sex therapist.

Some of the shots seem to be taken at Moordale itself, but it seems like the students have shifted to another school. Otis introduces himself as “I’m new here” to new students, so they’re clearly not in the old school.

Currently, the teaser keeps much of the plot under wraps and only teases the appearance of some characters. Netflix will probably release a more extended trailer that will give us more clarity about this season’s plot.
