How I Met Your Father Season 3 Release Date, Recap, and Speculation

“That’s the thing about falling in love. At one point, you just have to push past all the doubts and just go for it. Otherwise, you will not be able to have an absolutely perfect kiss in New York streets in the middle of a hurricane.”

It’s strange how we always love watching the same story again and again, isn’t it? How I Met Your Father has reached the end of its second season, so it’s time to talk about season 3.

The season finale was exactly the same as the season 1 finale of How I Met Your Mother, the show HIMYF draws direct inspiration from. Jesse and Sophie get together once again after the same old commitment issues, just like Ted and Robin from HIMYM.

Hannah and Sid, the couple which was supposed to succeed HIMYM’s iconic pair, Marshall and Lily, break up in the finale just like their HIMYM counterpart. The future Sophie also confirms that Charlie and Valentina will be endgame!

The series has not yet been renewed for season 3, but since we still do not know the identity of the father, I am sure there will be another season.

1. Season 3 Synopsis/Speculation

The season 2 finale ended with some new relationships and some broken hearts. Assuming that season 3 is on the cards, we will see Jesse and Sophie finally being in a proper relationship in the next season. While predicting the future episodes of HIMYF, it is essential to keep HIMYM in mind because the two shows share very few differences.

Going by the fate of Ted and Robin’s relationship, perhaps Jesse is not the father. The father and Sophie’s endgame will be two different people. The latter is likely to be Jesse.

Sid and Hannah broke up in the season finale, so there are two options. They might get back together after a while like Marshall and Lily (HIMYM), or they could get a divorce. From the vibes, it seems like it’s the end of Hannah and Sid because both realized they can no longer remain faithful.

So, it will be interesting to see who Sid and Hannah end up with in the future. Since Hannah has not featured much in the series, Sid’s future will be explored more going by the likes of it.

The season finale confirms that Charlie and Valentina will be endgame. So, we will see them getting back together in the next seasons, though I am not sure if it will happen as early as season 3 (if the series has more seasons).

In the season 2 finale, Val gets together with Sophie’s ex-boyfriend, Drew, but it is nothing serious from the looks of it. The narrator version of Sophie mentions that it was messed up, but also said that had it not happened, then Charlie and Val would not be together. So, there is some significance behind it.

Season 3 will most likely progress in the same way as the first two seasons. Like all sitcoms, we’ll get more standalone episodes and much of it will not contribute to the story. But a lot of changes took place in the season 2 finale, so I hope we’ll see more character development in season 3.

As of now, let’s hope we soon get an official confirmation of How I Met Your Father being renewed for another season.

The last two episodes, titled “Shady Parker” and “Okay Fine, It’s A Hurricane” released together. So, I’ll go one episode at a time.

In episode 19, titled “Shady Parker”, Sandy Rivers (another HIMYM easter egg) announces on TV that a hurricane is approaching. The idea behind it was to use it as a metaphor, since the season finale had a turmoil of emotions.

The episode begins as Jesse decides to move in with Parker and invites his friends to help him pack in Sid and Jesse’s apartment. While packing, Sophie doubts Parker after coming across a credit card on another name in her purse.

Sid soon joins Sophie, and they find painkillers in her bag on another woman’s name. Sophie suspects that Parker is a drug dealer and has illegal intentions behind coming to New York and decides to expose her in front of Jesse.

When Sid and Sophie reveal the truth, Parker explains that the credit card belongs to her brother and the painkillers are for her mother who has faced a major accident. She shifted to New York to take care of her mother and shares the bills with her brother.

Sophie also admits to Val that she still has feelings for Jesse and perhaps was trying to sabotage his relationship for the same reason. The episode ends as Jesse turns mad at Sophie for trying to frame Parker.

In episode 20 or the season 2 finale, titled “Okay Fine, It’s A Hurricane”, the gang gets together in Pemberton’s in the middle of a bad hurricane. The episode is a direct continuation of episode 19 and takes place on the same day.

Sophie feels annoyed as Jesse keeps being sarcastic with her. Val supports Sophie at first but unwillingly, as she knows Sophie too is in the wrong here. Meanwhile, Drew misinterprets Sophie’s feelings, thinking she wants to get back with her.

Hannah arrives a day earlier in New York and tells Sid she wanted to surprise him. But there’s a twist. Ellen receives a twist from Hannah, where she says “Eli, it was a onetime thing.”

Clearly, Hannah texted Ellen by mistake and the message was meant for Eli. When Ellen confronts her, Hannah admits that she cheated on Sid with Eli, a guy from work in LA. To escape her feelings, she flew to New York a day early.

When Hannah tells Sid about the incident on Ellen’s insistence, Sid says he would take time to forgive her. But when Hannah details how she tried to run away as soon as possible and also blocked Eli, Sid has second thoughts. He says that if it was a onetime thing, she would not have to run away from it. It is hinted that they broke up in the end.

Meanwhile, Sophie finds an old poem Jesse had written about her which Drew had with him. She confronts Jesse about it and the two have a fight. Both admit that they’ve had feelings for each other for months but end up fighting again.

Later, Val encourages Sophie to tell Jesse about her feelings and get together with him without being a coward. She’s lucky to have found someone who loves her back and there isn’t anything stopping them.

Sophie listens to Val and gets back together with Jesse. They kiss in the rain in the streets of New York as the narrator Sophie describes it as “perfect.”

The finale ends with a glimpse of the older Sophie narrating the story to her son. She also confirms that Charlie and Val were endgame as we see a photo of the couple with their son, Alex.

7. About How I Met Your Father

How I Met Your Father (HIMYF) is a spinoff series of the incredibly successful CBS show, How I Met Your Mother. The original show ran for nine seasons, from 2005 to 2014, quickly making its mark with a dedicated cult-like fanbase.

HIMYF was announced to start production in April 2021 with the Lizzy McGuire star Hilary Duff playing the lead called Sophie, narrating her journey to her children in the future.

The show’s flashbacks will start from Sophie and her close friends navigating love, life and struggles in the modern era of dating, paying bills and more, in 2021.

Created by writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger of This Is Us fame and directed by the original show’s director, Pamela Fryman, the first season of HIMYF is revealed to have 10 episodes. No further details have yet been released.
