Ed Boon, one of the masterminds behind the Mortal Kombat video game franchise, posted a picture of himself with Karl Urban. Urban will play Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2, a much-awaited sequel to Simon McQuoid’s original Mortal Kombat film.
Along with Urban, the movie also features new faces like Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Martyn Ford, and Ana Thu Nguyen. Initial filming officially started in June, but it has been delayed due to the recent SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.
Ed Boon recently shared a photo of himself with Urban on the sets of Mortal Kombat 2 in a recent Twitter post.

The photo was likely taken before the SAG-AFTRA strike, and Urban can be seen sporting classic Johnny Cage shades and a signature hairdo.
This snapshot has been followed up by producer Todd Garner also teasing another behind-the-scenes shot in his own Twitter post.
Johnny Cage was left out in the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, which was considered a big caveat of the film.
Although he was alluded to at the film’s end, omitting him from the main storyline was considered an insult to the franchise by many die-hard game fans.
Ed Boon and his crew were initially slated to produce a video-game adaptation of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s action film Bloodsport.
However, the licensing didn’t work out, and they finally diverted their attention and created Johnny Cage as a spoof of the famous Hollywood martial artist.
Little did they realize that not only would Cage go on to become one of the original fighters in the 1992 Mortal Kombat game but will be one of the major characters to be exclusively featured in the early test prototypes.
Urban’s initial announcement as Johnny Cage was a salve for the hardcore Mortal Kombat fans who had problems with his exclusion in the first film.
Moreover, it will be interesting to see how Urban’s Johnny Cage compares with Tan’s own protagonist, which many consider a Johnny Cage substitute.
Hopefully, the strike will be lifted soon, and the Mortal Kombat 2 crew will be able to get on with the filming as quickly as possible.
