In a recent interview, David Tennant discusses Good Omens season 2’s ‘brain exploding’ Doctor Who reference. Tennant plays Aziraphale’s (Michael Sheen) fallen-angel-turned-demon Crowley in the adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel.
Tennant is also well-known for playing the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who. He also plays the Fourteenth Doctor in the upcoming 60th-anniversary special.
Tennant and Sheen spoke to ComicBook.com before the SAG-AFTRA strike and discussed one of the major television references featured in Good Omens season 2.
The scene in question involves Aziraphale offering a rare Doctor Who magazine in exchange for a fellow shop owner attending the angel’s party in season 5.
Now that Doctor Who is confirmed to exist in the Good Omens universe, both Sheen and Tennant discussed whether a version of Tennant also exists within the world. Check out what they said below:
David Tennant: Oh, my goodness.
Michael Sheen: I can feel my brain exploding already.
Tennant: Well, we know that William Hartnell does, because he’s on the cover of the annual, isn’t he, that you get at the back of the bookshop?
Sheen: That’s right. That’s right.
Tennant: That is a … But then after that, we could be … Who knows? Timelines are very complicated things.
Sheen: Well, and then also, it turns out Aziraphale is a Doctor Who fan.
Tennant: Of course, he is … Who isn’t?
Sheen: I mean, the proper Doctors, though … He’s a fan of the proper Doctors,
Tennant: It’s something to think about, answers on a postcard.
Tennant isn’t the only Doctor Who character to appear in both series. Sheen himself was a part of Doctor Who as he provided the voice to the TARDIS-devouring entity called the House in the season 6 episode ‘The Doctor’s Wife’ alongside Matt Smith.
The Fifth Doctor actor and Tennant’s father-in-law Peter Davison also appears as the biblical figure Job in Good Omens season 2.
However, that’s not the end of the connection between the two series, as many supporting cast members of Good Omens also appeared in Doctor Who.
For instance, Derek Jacobi (Metatron) appeared as Professor Yana, an alias of the villainous Master in Doctor Who’s episode ‘Utopia.’ Similarly, Nina Sosanya, Maggie Service, Steve Pemberton, Mark Gatiss, and Reece Shearsmith have also appeared in both shows.
Despite Crowley and the Doctor being very different characters, both have become incredibly iconic roles in Tennant’s resume.
With so many casting similarities between the two shows, the easter eggs may keep piling up as we go forward. This will surely make things even more interesting for those who are fans of both shows!
