Stephen King Praises a Divisive Margot Robbie & Brad Pitt Film

Stephen King, one of the greatest writers of the horror genre, has showered praise for Margot Robbie and Bradd Pitt’s 2022 film Babylon.

The film talks about the depravity of the 1920s when the entire Hollywood diaspora went through a paradigm shift because of the change from silent films to sound.

Babylon is the kind of film you can either love or hate with all your heart. Some applaud the movie for its glamour and nuanced exploration of the era, while others loathed it for its messy depiction and over-the-top ambiance.

Now, King has weighed in with his take on the movie. The legendary author has taken to X (RIP Birdie) to share his thoughts and has firmly positioned himself in favor of Babylon.

On top of calling it ‘utterly brilliant–extravagant, over the top, hilarious, thought-provoking,’ King has even predicted that Babylon will become a cult classic in the future.

This is entirely unexpected, given that the film was a disaster at the box office and received hardly any Oscar nods. King has also concluded that his liking of the film speaks more about his taste than the movie.

Talking about King’s tastes, Babylon isn’t the only film he’s recommended via social media or during his interviews. The writer has never been shy of expressing his opinion on various creatives. Among the ones he likes, notable mentions are films like Stand By Me and Shawshank Redemption.

Surprisingly, neither belong to the horror genre, and both are based on his novellas. The writer has also expressed his fondness for Carrie, Cujo, and The Dead Zone.

What about movies he hates? Well, he’s expressed considerable dislike for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining in the past. However, he’s also recommended other Kubrick films like Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove.

Other horror movies he’s appreciated include Dementia 13, The Blair Witch Project, The Changeling, Night of the Demon, and Village of the Damned.

The legendary writer’s tastes are not only restricted to horror/thriller. He’s had high praise for creatives like The Queen’s Gambit, even claiming it to be better than the cult classic, The Trial of Chicago Seven. Even the lighthearted musical Billy Elliot has made it to his coveted list.

Finally, it seems like Stephen King has built up quite a diverse list of recommendations, and Babylon is just one more unexpected addition to that list.
