‘Love and Monsters’ is a beautifully crafted film that combines the adrenaline rush of an apocalyptic, monster-infested world with the tenderness of nostalgic amorous delusions.
The plot features Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien), who has been trying to survive his bunker life because ginormous monsters rule the Earth.
However, his life takes a paradigm shift as he embarks on a journey to find his high-school girlfriend, Aimee (Jessica Henwick).
‘‘Love and Monsters’’ effortlessly architects a ‘monsterpocalyptic’ universe that takes the viewers on a perilous journey with the protagonist. The world is brimming with monsters keen to reduce you to smithereens within seconds, yet you are attracted to them somehow. That’s the magic that director Michael Matthews pulls off in this film, backed by a stellar cast of Dylan O’Brien, Jessica Henwick, Dan Ewing, Michael Rooker, and more.

After a tumultuous journey, Joel finally reaches his long-lost Aimee. However, things are not as fairytale-esque as he’d imagined. Aimee has endured a lot in the last seven years and is a different person now. Moreover, she’s loved and lost someone extremely important in the process.
This imperfect meeting between the two escalates even further when the shady Captain (Dan Ewing) enters the scene. Joel realizes that the Captain and his group are planning to sacrifice Aimee’s colony to a monster crab in order to take their food away.
The climax features an incredible twist along with some bombastic action sequences. Joel and Aimee fight the gigantic crab while dealing with the nefarious Giant and his men.
Just when Joel seems to get the upper hand, he realizes that the crab isn’t an enemy after all. It’s been provoked by Giant and is becoming aggressive out of fear.
The miracle happens when Joel sets the crab free, and it goes on to devour the real villains. The climax crescendos into a horror-fest for Giant, which gives us the ultimate satisfaction.
‘Love and Monsters’ concludes with Joel bidding farewell to Aimee with a heartfelt kiss. He gives her the book of monsters and sets out on a 7-day journey to return to his bunker.
Finally, we get a recording where Joel says he’s seen how gruesome monsters can be, and the safest place seems to be high up in the mountains. This audio gets transmitted to all the bunkers, and other groups hike up the hills as a last resort to have a ‘normal’ life. That is, as normal as you can have in that world!

Love and Monsters is a 2020 American monster adventure film directed by Michael Matthews, with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen serving as producers. It stars Dylan O’Brien, Jessica Henwick, Dan Ewing, Michael Rooker, and Ariana Greenblatt.
Development began in 2012 as Monster Problems; the project lingered for several years until October 2018 when O’Brien and then Matthews joined the film.
The rest of the cast joined over the next few months, and filming took place in Australia from March to May 2019.
