Ryzen 9 7950X3D benchmark results out on Geekbench, compared to 7950X

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, set to be released later this month, has been benchmarked on Geekbench. The upcoming processor boasts 16-cores and 32-threads, coupled with 64MB of 3D V-Cache, sitting on the AM5 socket.

The tests were run on the ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero motherboard, running Windows 11 Home, paired with 32GB of DDR5 memory of unknown frequency.

Going beyond expectations in the benchmark, the 7950X3D scored 2157 points in the single-core test and 21841 in the multi-core,2% and 5% shy of the respective scores by the Ryzen 7950X.

This, however, is anything but the whole story. This is because the X3D series was not expected to perform in synthetic benchmarks such as Geekbench. This follows suit from 5800X3D and 5800X, having the same performance in such tests.

The processor’s true power is harnessed only under gaming workloads, under which the increased cache comes into play. This isn’t tested at all by the Geekbench benchmark.

The 7950X3D, during the benchmark, maxes out at 5.6GHz on a single core, with a base clock frequency of 4.2 GHz. It has a TDP of 120W, with a max of 162W, compared to 7950X’s whopping 230W.

Things get more interesting in the Blender front, wherein 7950X3D scores 558.59 points, looking up to the 7950X with 590.28 points on average.

The relative position of each processor is clarified. However, Geekbench and Blender fail to utilize the vast 144MB L2+L3 cache. Thus, one can hope for a more comprehensive gaming test to put the processors to real test.

Another thing to remember is that the 7950X score is based on many results, whereas the 7950X3D’s is from just one run. Therefore, they aren’t strictly comparable.

It can also be safely concluded that in day-to-day applications that primarily rely on single-thread performance and memory bus bandwidth, the Zen 4-based processor with 3D V-cache will have the upper hand compared to their counterparts lacking that extra cache memory.
