Overclocked GeForce RTX 4090 Faster in Laptop than 3090Ti in Desktop

Laptops are known for form factors limiting their performance. The Razer Blade 18 is for people who do not mind breaking the bank for the best parts and performance.

The Razer Blade 18 comes equipped with the latest 13th Gen HX processor, paired with an RTX 4090. Being the best in terms of performance in the market, it also comes at a hefty price tag.

As reported by Reddit user u/Kelzs, changes to Razer synapse, MSI Afterburner, and BIOS made the RTX 4090 with NVIDIA AD103 GPU outperform the 3090Ti desktop GPU by a margin of 2.7%. It scored 22339 graphic points on 3DMark TimeSpy, making it a whopping 72% faster than even the RTX 3080Ti GPU.

The desktop RTX 3090 Ti can score 21645 on the 3DMark TimeSpy test. The laptop 4090, on the other hand, can be pushed to a 22339 mark with a 250+ MHz overclock on the Razer Blade 18.

The CPU was experiencing thermal throttling. However, the very efficient GPU cooling pushed it enough to get a higher score.

This gain is not exclusive to synthetic tests but also to creative and gaming loads. The best part is that the laptop 4090 is limited to 175W while the 3090Ti requires north of 400W.

The TimeSpy test between the 3080Ti laptop and the 3090Ti desktop shows a performance jump of about 57%. Comparisons between the desktop 4090 and laptop 4090 show an almost similar 62% difference.

Performance difference at 4K across different games on Desktop 4090 vs Laptop 4090

The 8nm Samsung nodes on the desktop 3090Ti are upgraded to TSMC’s 4nm in the laptop RTX 4090. This is the primary reason for better performance at a lower TGP.

The critical factor in this gap is that NVIDIA is not using the same SKUs for these models. This is proven by the fact that the laptop 4090 is just a toned-down version of the desktop RTX 4080 with limited TGP.

The performance difference between the same-generation desktop and the mobile processor is clearly due to power constraints on the mobile versions. It’s interesting to see how efficient they’re getting with every passing generation.

This overpowered performance goes to show how efficient NVIDIA’s new technology for the RTX 40 GPUs is for laptops, and that their dominance in the mobile GPU segment remains undisputed.
