Nvidia retains top spot in PC GPU segment with AMD and Intel amidst decline

Jon Peddie Research released a GPU market summary for the fourth quarter of 2022, wherein Nvidia led the GPU market share while Intel and AMD maintained their hold over the market.

The PC GPU market might have hit 64.2 million units in Q42022 but decline by 35%(yearly) and 15.4%(sequentially). AMD’s share increased by 0.4%, Intel’s share declined by 1.1%, and Nvidia’s shares increased by 0.68%.

The decrease in sales and losses can be attributed to the rising cost of PC components, the increase in demand due to hoarding by miners, and inflation, which has strongly affected consumers globally.

Intel maintained a 71% market share within the overall GPU market, while Nvidia came in at 17% and AMD a 12% market share. Nvidia held it’s more than 80% market share.

Intel and AMD shared the 9% market share in terms of shipment. This is big considering that the boys in blue have recently entered the GPU sector with their highly claimed Arc GPUs.

Some important facts were observed in the research, which are:

  1. The GPU’s overall attach rate to PCs for the quarter was 118%, up 3% from Q3 2022.
  2. Overall PC CPU market decreased by 17.4% from Q3 to Q4 and 35.3% from 2021 to 2022.
  3. Desktop graphic add-in boards using discrete boards increased 7.8% from Q3.
  4. The GPU shipments will grow at a rate of 0.19% between 2022-2026.
  5. Discrete GPUs are expected to occupy 32% of the market share.
  6. Desktop GPUs were down by 24%, while notebook GPUs declined by 43%.

This is also the largest decrease since it peaked in 2011.
