AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 series, codenamed “Storm Peak”, is set to be a competitor to Intel’s Sapphire Rapids WS Series in the server-based-data center processors.
CPU-Z which can be considered as one of the best software for processors, in their latest 2.05 update mentioned in its changelog that it’s bringing support to both Threadripper 7000 series as well as its competitor Intel Xeon Sapphire Rapids.
The CPU-Z 2.05 update changelog brings support to the classic versions of Intel Xeon Sapphire Rapids platform, prelim support for AMD “Storm Peak” platform and the Zhaoxin KX 6000G/4 CPU.
The 64 Zen 4 CPU by Ryzen is expected to compete very well with the flagship Intel Sapphire Rapids W3400 with 56 cores.
The support is also extended to the custom versions of:
- Intel Core i9-13900/K/F/KF, Core i7-13700/K/F/KF, Core i5-13600/K/F/KF, Core i5-13500, Core i5-13400 and Core i3-13100
- Intel ARC A770, A750, A580 (ACM-G10) and A380 (ACM-G11) GPUs
- multipliers > 64x on AMD Ryzen 7000
- NVIDIA RTX 4000 GPUs
The Ryzen Threadripper 7000 boasts a configuration with either 64 cores or higher, with a limit of 96 cores since it’s based on the EPYC Genoa Technology.
Storm Peak lineup sees the switch to DDR5 memory, providing faster data transfer rates at a lower power consumption. PCIe 5.0 is also supported, allowing for faster intercommunication between CPU and other components.
The only downside is the need for a new LGA 6096 socket to support such an advanced new architecture built atop the Zen4. This could also be the reason why the launch has been delayed to the Q3 2023 to extend the lifetime of the Zen3.
If recent rumors are anything to go by, AMD would be looking to launch a HEDT (High End Desktop) and WS(Workstation) series under the same subset as a part of the 7000 Threadripper series.
The HEDT series is set to receive overclocking support while being limited to quad-channel DDR5 memory. The WS series could receive octa-channel support while receiving almost double the number of PCIe lanes.
The head-to-head battle between Team Blue and Team Red has been reignited once more. It will be interesting to see which way the market tips it’s scale towards in the Q3 of 2023.
