AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.2 plugin for Unreal Engine out now

AMD released the source code for the FidelityFX Super Resolution, it’s upscaling technology, just a fortnight ago, with the latest version being deployed in titles like Forza Horizon.

However, AMD had to test it for wider usage and prepare formal documentation before releasing it for public usage and enabling developer access.

Recently, AMD released the latest FSR library as a plug-in for the Unreal Engine Powered games. Several improvements have been introduced that reduce “High-Velocity Ghosting”, constantly plaguing racing games. It also includes a Debug API Checker that provides easier debugging for developers.

Unreal Engine

In addition to the original FSR 2 release, the changelog mentions the improvements that include:

  1. Support for Unreal Engine 5.1
  2. Includes general improvements that tackle ghosting
  3. Improved handling of ghosting for objects with “World Position Offsets”-more objects with WPO should render velocity by default. This would reduce “Fizzing artifacts during disoclusions”.
    • Animated foliage has a better appearance, depending primarily on developer settings.
    • Animated materials are improved marginally using different processes.
AMD – Difference in quality of graphics with FSR enabled

AMD has also announced that the FSR technology surged from 110 available supported games to about 226 last December, and now it sees an unprecedented 250 available.

These games are deploying either FSR1 or FSR2, with AMD pushing to replace FSR1 with FSR2 soon. This is especially important in phasing out FSR1 as the company is looking to move to FSR3 by the end of this year.
