Ryzen 7 7800X3D matches performance on A620 and X670 class motherboard

The recently launched mammoth of a CPU – Ryzen 7 7800X3D – has been tested by Youtuber minteger on the A620 motherboard. The results aren’t that shocking, given the buildup up to the release of the CPU.

The CPU, targeted towards pure gamers, is built for efficiency and gaming performance. While the 7800X3D is more than capable of delivering optimum performance when coupled with a B650 or A620, it is mostly coupled with the high-end X670-class motherboard.

However, as per the Korean YouTuber, the performance of the 7800X3D on Gigabyte’s A620 Gaming X motherboard is comparable to its performance on a high-end X670 motherboard. Regarding gaming performance on FHD resolution, there was virtually no performance difference with a subtle 1-2 FPS difference.

This is good news for those trying to lay their hands on this CPU equipped with a huge 3DV Cache of 96MB that comes in at around $469.

Thus, there is an absence of any difference in the performance of the 7800X3D when coupled with the $300+ priced X670 class vs. $100 A620 motherboards. This means that an economical motherboard choice will maintain performance.

The only minor hitch that was noted is the fact that there was a large disparity in clock speed when running on Gigabyte’s A620, which has a larger VRM supply than most other A620’s.

The X670 is priced at a premium, as it maintained a constant 4.8GHz across all cores. However, the variation on the A620 remained between 4.5 to 4.7 GHz.

The A620 also showed a higher temperature of 83 degrees Celsius when compared to 78 degrees Celsius on the X670. There was also a slight difference in the Cinebench R23 benchmarks.

Difference in thermals when the 7800X3D is coupled with the A620 or the X670

The thermal dissipation dissimilarities are suggested to be the main cause for 18143 points for multi-core on the Cinebench benchmark on X670 compared to 17330 on A620.

This shows a small difference of 4.5% on multi-threaded applications such as Cinebench R23. It is not suggested to affect gaming much. This aligns with AMD’s announcement of cutting clock frequency to boost performance using the 3D V-cache.

MSI boards equipped with Enhanced Boost profiles using PBO2 eliminate the clock disparities seen on the X670 vs. A620.

As noted, the A620 motherboards have been designed with 65W CPUs in mind, which is fit for use with the Ryzen 7800X3D, which hits a maximum of 50W in gaming.

Thus, for anyone looking to invest in a gaming CPU and not looking to break the bank for a motherboard to match, the A620 and the Ryzen 7800X3D are matches made in heaven.

Overclockers looking for enhanced performance and an expanded set of I/O should couple the CPU with a B650 or an X670 class motherboard.

The CPU has also secured top spot in weekly sales at German Retailer. Thus, gamers need not look further for a potent gaming rig CPU.
