AMD and its partners resolve the burnout issue for Ryzen 7000 series CPU

AMD’s Ryzen 7000 CPUs were burning up and damaging the motherboards, as reported by users. They had addressed the issue and mentioned that they were working with their board partners to fix the issue as soon as possible.

It seems that AMD has sorted out the burning issue on the Ryzen 7000 series CPUs, citing chip voltage as the root cause. The AGESA BIOS released by board partners will fix the issue and ensure stable operation.

AMD’s spokesperson, via Anandtech, mentioned that the new AGESA BIOS would limit the AM5 motherboards to operating within the specified SoC voltage limit of 1.3V. This would not prevent users from overclocking their memory EXPO or XMP kits or boosting using PBO technology.

Their ODM partners will release new BIOS for their AM5 boards in the coming days. They reassured the victims of the burnout issues that AMD Customer Support was prioritizing these cases.

As per the promises by AMD, board partner ASUS has recently issued a community notice and removed all older BIOS firmware from their product page and left the new one for the users to download to update their motherboards.

The AM5 socket, which, when coupled with the Ryzen 7000 series CPU and overclocked, caused the burnout issues

As per the community notice, it was addressed that the new rules, as defined by AMD, will see the SoC voltage limited to a maximum of 1.3V to protect the motherboard and CPU.

ASUS suggested that users cool the CPUs adequately with the 240mm AIO liquid cooler. MSI confirmed that despite no reports of burnout due to voltage boost on MSI motherboards, they released the remedial BIOS update, as requested by AMD.

ASRock also released BIOS firmware updates for their X670, B650, and A620 boards based on the latest AM5 architecture. Biostar has followed suit and released a BIOS update to limit the SoC Voltage.

Gigabyte also released a BIOS update to reduce the risk of CPU and motherboard damage by overvolting. They confirmed that this update would not hamper the GIGABYTE exclusive Performance Bung in the BIOS option, allowing users to fine-tune the CPU Voltage.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed explicitly by AMD if the issues are exclusively on the Ryzen 7000 series or the 7000X3D, the remedial measures and efforts they are taking to sort out the issue are commendable.
