AMD’s More Compact Navi 31 die present in Navi 32 RDNA 3 Package

Recently, AMD’s Navi 32 GPU was leaked in a video published by Forbes, where they had a conversation with AMD CEO and President Lisa Su about the company’s plans moving forward.

AMD’s Navi 32 GPU package was obtained by Moore’s Law is Dead, prominent leakers on YouTube, The GPU was shown to house a Navi 31 GPU instead of the expected Navi 32.

A quick measurement of the package by MLID showed that the Navi 31 is in the middle with six MCDs. The die size is 529 sq mm and 304.35 sq mm GCD.

The stock Navi 31 die measures 55 x 47.5 sq mm. The Navi 31 housed in Navi 32 package measures just 40 x 40 sq mm. This means there’s a 39% reduction in the packaging area.

The main reason for the choice of a modified Navi 31 in a Navi 32 packaging was explained by MLID. They explained that these models were meant for partners to evaluate thermals before Navi 32 was ready for testing.

One interesting thing is that the GPU also featured two dummy MCD dies. This means that the Navi 31 is a 256-bit bus, not a cut-down 320-bit like the 7900XT.

The resemblance to Radeon Pro W7800 cannot be refuted, barring the two MCD dies that have been disabled. Also, at least two GDDR6 memory dies on the PCB.

MLID also believes that the final version of the card will have 8 GDDR6 dies, allowing a 256-bit bus interface and 16GB VRAM. The most exciting thing about this Navi 32 package is that a similar die could be used for higher-end laptops due to its small form factor.

This could be a very beneficial move on AMD’s part. This would allow them to compete with Nvidia in the high-end space directly. At launch, it’s expected to have a competitive MSRP similar to the RX 7800 XT and other variants.
