Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Remaster Reportedly in the works

Assassin’s Creed is moving forward from the ambitious misadventures in the form of epic RPG-styled titles, namely Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla.

The upcoming title, Mirage, will have incentivize stealth and parkour mechanics similar to AC: Unity. They’re looking to return to the roots, as the developers and game designers said in a video.

Recently, as revealed by two sources via Kotaku, a remake of 2013’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is in the works and is in its earliest stages. The sources also mentioned that Ubisoft Singapore is one of the studios leading the work on revolutionizing water mechanics in the franchise and is helping modernize Black Flag.

When Kotaku reached out to Ubisoft, they refused to comment. The only thing known about the Black Flag remake is the fact that it is under development.

This makes it virtually impossible to guess how much of the gameplay seen in 2013’s original Black Flag will be retained or overhauled.

It’s expected that since the developers promised to do away with the RPG gameplay style after the three epic titles, the Black Flag remake will maintain the original style of gameplay based on stealth.

Ship-to-ship Naval combat in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

What set Black Flag ahead of its competitors back in 2013 was the water mechanics and the ship-to-ship combat. After the news, many fans took to Twitter to say that they expect the remaster to be more than just a mere port to the next-gen consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Ubisoft’s other live-service pirate-based game, Skull and Bones, which was supposed to release last fall, has been delayed indefinitely. This is after rumors of internal problems within Ubisoft Singapore. It must be kept in mind that Skull and Bones grew out initially as an expansion to Black Flag.

This year’s Mirage is one of the six Assassin’s Creed projects under development. Set in 9th Century Baghdad, the game connects back to the roots of the Assassin’s Creed Franchise in terms of gameplay, stealth and visuals.

The same studio that brought out Odyssey, Ubisoft Quebec, is working on Assassin’s Creed Codename Red. Red is set in feudal Japan and is being designed essentially by the same creative directors.

The direction in which Ubisoft, as a whole, is striving towards is impressive. It remains to be seen what improvements the developers want to make to the fan-loved Black Flag.
