Developers Bethesda reveal file size for Starfield ahead of launch

Bethesda’s first new IP in over 25 years, Starfield, has been developing for about ten years. It was announced during 2018’s E3 event, accompanied by a teaser.

Game Director Todd Howard had described the game as “Skyrim in Space.” That quite easily describes the game’s magnitude, which is set to release soon.

On their official Xbox Site, it was revealed that Starfield will require 125 GB of storage space. This is quite a huge chunk of memory, even by modern AAA title standards. The size of the game on PC and Xbox Series X|S is the same as of now.

Approximate size of Starfield as seen on the official Xbox game page

Most fans weren’t shocked by this as in the official gameplay reveal trailer, Bethesda had confirmed that the gameplay would quite literally be of galactic proportions.

In-game, players can create their space explorer to wander 1000s of planets, meet NPCs, craft equipment and improve skills. In the same video, several in-game locations showed developers scaled the game to live up to the hype.

The revealed locations include Neon, Akila and New Atlantis from the “Location Insight Developer Videos.”

Players who own the smaller and the cheaper Xbox Series S will require over 20% of the total space available and might be hard for the player unless some titles are uninstalled or archived.

Another plausible but more expensive alternative is an expansion memory card to expand the internal memory of the Xbox. However, this isn’t marring the spirits of the gamers looking forward to the title.

Starfield, as of now, will be available for pre-loading 5 days ahead of the launch. To understand the magnitude of the hype of Starfield, some titles and software have been delayed, preventing competition with Starfield.

The title has also been marketed to perfection. The post-launch roadmap is also good, with a DLC being planned officially and modders who have promised upgrades from day one.

The launch date of September 6, 2023, means that players have plenty of time to sort out the storage issues on their Xbox and PC so that when the time comes, they can float around in space, exploring it to the fullest.
