Major plot spoiler revealed via ESRB rating for Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Resident Evil 7’s plot was spoiled by an unexpected source: ESRB rating. The key feature of these ratings is that they mention the reasons for giving the game a particular rating. And this sometimes means inadvertent plot leaks.

As spotted by @ACFirstCiv, the ESRB rating for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage has hinted that the player will have to kill fellow assassins. This is a big plot twist as this could hint towards Basim, the protagonist, betraying the Hidden Ones at some point in the storyline.

Basim was a mentor and friend to Eivor in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, the highest-selling AC title. Later in the game, it is revealed that Basim is the human reincarnation of Isu Loki.

Isu Loki survived the Great Catastrophe using the Yggdrasil, an ancient supercomputer the character used to preserve his consciousness. Basim tries to betray Eivor but remains trapped inside Yggdrasil’s chamber for centuries.

This is until Layla Hassan is tricked into freeing Basim. Assassin’s Creed fans are aware of the complexity of Basim’s character. Even in the gameplay reveal trailer, Basim was shown to struggle with recurrent visions that haunt him.

ESRB rating for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage revealing a major plot point

He is also trying to help the Hidden Ones terminate the Order in 9th Century Baghdad. This means the game will have plenty of interpersonal and intrapersonal struggles.

This is why the theory of Basim betraying the Hidden Ones is unsurprising. It could hint at a modern-day dispute between Basim and the Assassin Order, as suggested by the ending of AC: Valhalla.

In the end, Basim is revealed to have malicious intent towards the Order and insists on a face-to-face talk with William Miles. After conversing with Basim via the Animus, William decided that Basim would explore his genetic sequence in the Animus.

This would not be the first time the protagonist intentionally kills Assassin members. It was seen in AC: Rogue, where the players must kill Shay, a Templar Order member.

It will be interesting to see what precisely is the plot that leads to Basim killing members of the Hidden Ones and his fellow assassins. The consequence of this action could lead to his possible expulsion or his transformation to a villain. We will know when Assassin’s Creed Mirage releases on October 12th, 2023.
