Assassin’s Focus Glitch animation in Assassin’s Creed Mirage debunked

Assassin’s Creed Mirage has received an excellent response from the veterans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, who have lauded how the developers, Ubisoft Bordeaux, created 9th-century Baghdad in Mirage and the many abilities of Basim that make the gameplay such a treat.

GameInformer’s Wesley LeBlanc asked Ubisoft Bordeaux about the glitching animation when a player uses Basim’s “Assassin’s Focus” unique ability. Ubisoft confirmed that the glitch effect is because Basim’s pace and efficiency make the Animus struggle to keep up, effectively making the Animus glitch.

In the Assassin’s Focus ability, introduced in Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Basim can practically freeze time and point a reticule over multiple enemies.

This allows him to stop time and teleport between them, assassinating them all and reducing conflict times. Initially, Basim can only kill two enemies at a time using the Assassin’s Focus ability.

As time progresses and players upgrade Basim’s abilities, they can kill up to five enemies using this ability at a time. While many fans have condemned this and said that this move is unrealistic, the veterans of the franchise have jumped to its defense.

Lore-accurate Basim’s pace of assassination is beyond comprehension. Hence, it makes sense that the Animus glitches when he assassinates five people simultaneously.

As always, skeptical fans say this is just Ubisoft’s excuse for cutting costs by not having to animate Basim transitioning to enemies. They compared it to Arkham Knight’s Fear Takedowns or Splinter Cell’s Mark and Execute Ability.

Another fan said that a more believable and viable explanation is from the POV of bystanders, watching Basim assassinate his targets. He goes in, assassinates them, and the next moment, he’s standing amidst a pile of bodies.

The controversies will rage on. But the matter of fact is that Ubisoft Bordeaux, overall, did an excellent job in Assassin’s Creed: Mirage. Every player should play Mirage and explore 9th century Baghdad for themselves as Basim.

About Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is an action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux and published by Ubisoft. The game is the thirteenth primary installment in the Assassin’s Creed series and the successor to 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. While its historical timeframe precedes that of Valhalla, its modern-day framing story succeeds Valhalla’s own.

Set in 9th-century Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age—in particular during the Anarchy at Samarra—the story follows Basim Ibn Ishaq (a character first introduced in Valhalla), a street thief who joins the Hidden Ones to fight for peace and liberty against the Order of the Ancients,[b] who desire peace through control. The main narrative focuses on Basim’s internal struggle between his duties as a Hidden One and his desire to uncover his mysterious past.
