Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s disguise system borrows from AC: Liberation

Ubisoft Bordeaux, the developers of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, had a field time rediscovering old elements and bringing back the authentic Assassin’s Creed franchise to the fans.

Fans have spotted the costume disguise mechanic in specific missions of Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, first introduced by Ubisoft in Assassin’s Creed Liberation. This means that the choice of costume affected the gameplay.

Fans often overlook AC: Liberation when discussing noteworthy titles in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. However, the label brought one extensive revolutionary inclusion for the first and last time in the series.

In AC: Liberation, Ubisoft designed the game such that the costume choice would dictate the game’s nature. Three choices were available: standard assassin approach, stealthy approach, and “the lady outfit.”

For the Stealthy approach, players had to don Aveline’s assassin outfit, giving them access to all weapons, free running, and parkour at the cost of notoriety. To be stealthy, players had to choose the slave outfit.

This allowed them to blend into the crowd and move freely. However, it restricted the choice of weapons. The final “Lady Outfit” allowed the player to use charm and bribery to get what they wanted at the cost of reduced movement and weaponry.

This heavily inspires Mirage’s approach. Firstly, disguises are not effective throughout the game but are restricted to specific missions. Secondly, the inclusion of disguises is via natural game progression.

After the player finishes the particular mission, the disguise becomes another costume in the inventory. A specific part of the fan base wanted more out of this system and the masks usable in the open world rather than being tied down to a particular mission.

Another optimistic part of the fanbase is happy because this is an improvement over the fact that earlier, it used to be a hooded figure running amok in ancient settings.

Players hope this will not be a one-time thing and that Ubisoft will look to expand on this feature in future titles. Meanwhile, players can experience 9th-Century Baghdad in Assassin’s Creed Mirage as Basim, which is out now.

The game is the thirteenth primary installment in the Assassin’s Creed series and the successor to 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Set in 9th-century Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age—in particular during the Anarchy at Samarra—the story follows Basim Ibn Ishaq (a character first introduced in Valhalla), a street thief who joins the Hidden Ones to fight for peace and liberty against the Order of the Ancients,[b] who desire peace through control. The main narrative focuses on Basim’s internal struggle between his duties as a Hidden One and his desire to uncover his mysterious past.
