Developers Blizzard reveal the changes coming to Overwatch 2 in Season 9

Summary:

  • Developers Blizzard confirm the changes coming to Season 9 of Overwatch 2.
  • The changes include more transparent Rank Progression Updates and Real-Time Reward Progression.
  • There will also be a new tier for Competitive Ranking and a new tier for weapons.

When Overwatch 2’s roadmap was unveiled in May, fans saw what would come. They were the most excited for seasons 8 and 9. Now, Season 8 is onto us, and all the details and information on Season 9 have been revealed.

The developers in a Blog Post have mentioned that Season 9 will bring Instant Rank Progression Updates instead of the controversial system, real-Time Reward Progression, including a new tier of Emerald Weapons and introducing the new Rank tier called “Ultimate.”

Developers Blizzard had earlier made a controversial yet bold choice. They had replaced the regular Rank Progression update in favor of one that showed the Rank Progression only after five wins or fifteen losses.

This has caused quite some uproar amongst the fanbase. This brings back the transparent and regular Rank Progression Update system. This new Rank Progression System will feature a win streak and calibration.

Players will also have the choice of viewing their Season progress before the usual end of the season. This will be possible via the Real-Time Reward Progression, wherein they can see their progress for the Season Rewards before the Season ends.

The developers have ensured that the gameplay experience does not go stale. Hence, they are including the new higher tier of Emerald weapons.

The caveat is that the competitive points required to buy Emerald Weapons cannot be stockpiled across seasons. This means that Emerald Weapons are a badge of honor for those who can accumulate many points in one season.

The ranking system will also see the addition of the “Ultimate” tier above the Grand Master, which was the highest competitive rank in Overwatch: 2. The developers also mentioned that with the comeback of instant rank progression, placements have also made a comeback.

This will be reminiscent of the first game, wherein players must go through 10 matches after a “soft-rank reset” every season to get the initial rating.

Competitive grouping restrictions have been eased, meaning that players in Bronze can play with their Platinum or Diamond friends. This, however, will lead to longer match-making times as the system has to find a similarly imbalanced team.

About Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 is an upcoming first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The sequel to the 2016 hero shooter Overwatch, the game is intended to have a shared environment for player-versus-player (PvP) modes with the first game while introducing persistent cooperative modes. A major change in PvP was to reduce team sizes from six to five, which required several characters to be reworked.

Overwatch 2 is set to launch as free-to-play on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in early access on October 4, 2022. It will feature full cross-platform play.
