As a result of the massive miss on the expected revenue, Bungie had laid off a considerable chunk of their staff and developers. While this has been a standard move since Covid-19 struck, Destiny 2 making it to the Platinum list might unveil something dark about the developers.

Bungie’s inflated expectations for Destiny 2 in their filings hit two birds with one stone. Firstly, they could increase their valuation ahead of their takeover by Sony, and secondly, they could reduce the workforce and cut down on the salaries.

According to reports, things have also gone from bad to worse for Bungie. The Final Shape expansion has been pushed back four months into June 2024 due to the reduced workforce.

Some big names lost their jobs during the layoffs, suggesting that there might be some element of truth to this. Even though Destiny 2 did well, it’s very possible that Bungie is not doing well.
