EA to Discontinue 128 Player Breakthrough Mode in Battlefield 2042

EA’s Battlefield 2042 held promise, but it was jammed with bugs and glitches, which downgraded players’ experiences.

The developers were pretty late in adding basic online gaming features like voice chat configuration and player scoreboard to the game. It is safe to say; that the shooter game was not well received.

EA comes with more disheartening news as their latest tweet revealed that the 128 Breakthrough multiplayer mode would be discontinued from the next update, 0.4.1. The mode will switch to 64 player count instead.

The update is set to launch on May 19 2022.

Their official announcement on the EA website explained,

In Breakthrough’s 128 player mode, we feel that the value and impact of an individual player, and squad is reduced due to the increased intensity and chaos of the combat.

When reviewing Breakthrough, we noted that the 64 player version represented a more tactical experience.

Reducing our player count here helps to remove some of the chaos from the experience, and in combination with the reductions that we have made to the number of available combat vehicles, it means players are better able to hold frontlines more effectively.

Players will also find more space to work together and fulfill their individual roles.

In addition, there are several other changes in the 0.4.1 update.

  • Aim Assist improvement for moving targets
  • Vehicle Aim Sensitivity and Transport Vehicle Freelook Sensitivity Controller settings efficiency improved
  • Prominent and Larger Insertion Beacon
  • Specialist Angel will no longer grant Armor Plates
  • Boris weapon handling settings for the SG-36 Sentry Gun changed

EA is doing the most to build up players’ damaging impression of the game. The team recently asked players’ opinions on the new features and invited suggestions. It will be interesting to see how the input will influence future updates.

Previously, the game had fewer active players on Steam than previous participants in the series. EA blamed the simultaneous release of multiplayer shooter Halo Infinite for the second-rate response.

While the update does improve certain gray areas and fix a lot of broken patches, it might not adequately deliver exactly what the players wanted. This update might make or break the game’s future standings amidst the likes of the Halo and COD franchise.
