We first saw the Mendocino APU at AMD’s Computex 2022 keynote. It was unexpected as AMD is known for focusing on high-end GPUs, but the device showed a lot of promise in catering to the low-end market segment.
However, the keynote did not mention Compute Units included in the Mendocino APU.
Twitter user @Olrak29_ posted a leaked slide featuring Mendocino’s “Basic Introductions.”
The leaked slide highlights that Mendocino will feature two CUs i.e., 128 stream processors. It is a bare minimum GPU, with about a quarter of the total CUs compared to the Steam Deck.
The device could be limited to a two-pipe FP unit. Mendocino seems to have twin LPDDR5 channels to support 4-32GB RAM.
The multimedia segment appears exceptional, with a four-display support system and AV1 and VP9 video decoding in hardware.
The APU will be used in the Lenovo Ideapad 1. It is built on TMSC 6nm process; AMD promises a budget-friendly, sleek, efficient mobile device with up to 10 hours of battery life.
The AMD Mendocino APU is slated for release by the end of 2022. Fans have been eager to see how Mendocino performs. It will support Windows and ChromeOS devices alike. However, with devices like the AyaNeo Air Plus in the market, people might be stuck over which portable device to buy.
