Little Phoenix– AMD’s Quad-Core Zen4 Based APU for Next-Gen Steam Deck

AMD’s Financial Analyst Day overview revealed an insight into the company’s prospects. The Zen 4 roadmap showed the upcoming Raphael series, Dragon Range APU, and Phoenix Point APU slated for launch in the coming months.

However, there might be an undisclosed project after all.

Youtube @Moore’s Law Is Dead claimed AMD is developing a new chip based on the Zen 4 architecture featuring RDNA3 graphics. He nicknamed it “Little Phoenix” as the processor is a smaller version of the Phoenix Point APU.

Reportedly, the APU has four cores, eight threads, and four WorkGroup processors. The core configuration is similar to the Mendocino mobile APU, the only difference being that Mendocino uses Zen 4 instead of Zen 2.

The graphics system is getting a massive upgrade with 4x CUs and RDNA 3 architecture, also used in the Radeon RX 7000 series.

The processor will be the successor to the Van Gogh APU, which is currently used in the Steam Deck by Valve.

The Van Gogh APU also has four cores with eight threads. It features RDNA 2 graphics architecture with 8 CUs clocking at 1.6 MHz.

Gaming console successors are not exactly quick to launch, so we should expect the product to be available about one or two years later. The Little Phoenix APU is still in development; Valve might release more details as the design is finalized.
