Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world, single-player, action RPG set in the 1800s wizarding world. Players can experience life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and go on a dangerous magical journey to uncover hidden truths.
A new trailer for Hogwarts Legacy was released at Gamescom Opening Night Live.
The gameplay featured the Forbidden Forest, where students can go when they are out of class. It also gave an example of the kind of moral choices players would have to make.
The trailer showed two students at a face-off, where one was given a choice to either learn the prohibited spell Crucio or be struck with it.
Hogwarts Legacy has been rife with controversy since the game was in development. The studio distanced itself from a former developer and JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter franchise. The latter faced a social backlash in the wake of her transphobic viewpoint.
Even though cutting off Rowling brought Hogwarts Legacy to a good light, the publisher Warner Bros. Games has actually sided with the author, even doing much to defend her.
WB Games president David Haddad explained,
I may not agree with her, and I might not agree with her stance on a range of topics, but I can agree that she has the right to hold her opinions.

Considering everything that has come to light, Harry Potter fans are questioning whether it is morally correct to support the new game. Several media outlets are executing a boycott on any Hogwarts Legacy coverage.
Hogwarts Legacy releases on February 23, 2023, for PlayStation5, PlayStation4, PlayStation4 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
