The PlayStation 5 has regularly sold out ever since its launch in 2020. Sony is now releasing the third edition of the console, with a few improvements.
The third version of Sony’s PlayStation 5 console codenamed “CFI-1202” now comes with a smaller SoC called “Oberon Plus.”
The updated AMD SoC is manufactured using TSMC 6nm technology. Earlier, Sony had been using the 7nm “Oberon” SoC for the PS5 until now. Both nodes are compatible with each other.
The new SoC was discovered after the new console variant was first reported in Australia. The model also includes new components such as a new mainboard, a smaller and lighter cooler, and an updated silicon power supply. The console demands less power and a less demanding cooling solution.
The Oberon Plus features the same design, Zen 2 architecture, and RDNA 2 graphics as its predecessor, the Oberon, so no processor changes have been introduced.
The physical specifications of the Oberon Plus are identical to the Oberon, except the chip, which is around 260 mm², about 40 mm² smaller than the 7nm chip.
The approximate production expenses could go down by 12% for AMD and Sony. Reportedly, Microsoft is also expected to alter its designs to a 6nm node.
