Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Might Add Controversial Security Step

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is just a couple of weeks away from launch. Modern Warfare 2 is one of the anticipated games of the year. Its beta launch was recorded to be the biggest in series history.

Taking inspiration from Overwatch 2’s security, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will also require players to register a phone number.

Blizzard’s post on Battle.net Phone Notifications reads “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, newly created Overwatch 2 accounts, and newly created Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts require a phone number.”

The same feature was criticized in Overwatch 2, even though its intention was to prevent unfair means of cheating. Since it does not allow prepaid phone numbers, it prevents a huge number of players from accessing the game. Clearly, the system is inconsistent.

Keep in mind, messaging apps like iMessages, WhatsApp, prepaid phone numbers, and VoIP will not work, making Modern Warfare 2’s accessibility questionable.

Activision is yet to announce the new update, so it could take a while for the actual implementation, or we might not even get the feature given the controversy surrounding it. The security step for Overwatch 2 was announced just a few days before launch, so most likely Modern Warfare 2 will follow the same steps.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has a huge community. Additional security just makes it harder for legitimate players to play the game. At the same time, it does prevent cheating, which is prevalent in Modern Warfare 2, to some extent. There’s a possibility that other games will soon be implementing this feature, especially after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 releases on October 28 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
