Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Player Discusses SBMM in Casual Modes

Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) is used in all multiplayer games and is a frequent topic of discussion. It is used to level the playing field among players, but this may not be true after all.

Reddit user @TheUltimateDoobis pointed out the downside of SBMM in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The user attached a screenshot of a chat they had with their friend. The other person can be seen saying that they are not sure whether or not to continue playing with them. They proceed to explain that their own lobbies used to be rather fun, but queuing up with their friend makes it feel like it’s “110% or nothing.”

Basically, the person is saying that since the user is a higher-skill player in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, they get matched against other players of similar skill level, which makes their overall gaming experience “sweaty.”

The post garnered popularity with over 1K upvotes as other players seemed to agree that even casual Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer matches feel too overwhelming and intense.

SBMM is traditionally well-accepted in ranked multiplayer queues. Players compete against others to improve their skills and climb up the rankings. However, the use of SBMM in casual modes is deemed controversial. There is no need for casual matches to be so grueling and serious, but without SBMM, lower-skill players will have to grind more to gain kills.

A great point to note is that the higher-skilled player is not able to team up with a friend anymore, which spoils their fun. Interestingly, lower-skill players have a good time playing since they are matched against players of similar, if not equal caliber.

Activision is unlikely to make any changes to SBMM in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, this matchmaking issue is worth acknowledging since everyone should have a fun time without feeling dominated in every match they play. Sometimes, all you want to do is just hop on with your mates and play!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
