AMD Confirms Small Percentage of Radeon RX 7900 XTX Cards Affected

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX cards recently came under fire for their incessant overheating issues. In some instances, the maximum sensor temperature read was reported to go as high as 110°C. However, only the cards following AMD’s reference design seem to be damaged.

AMD Radeon Senior Vice President and General Manager, Scott Herkelman, recently addressed the thermal throttling related to Radeon RX 7900 XTX cards.

In an interview with PCWorld, Herkelman confirmed that AMD has indeed identified the overheating issues. He also stated that only a limited number of cards were affected by this.

It all comes down to a small batch of vapor chamber actually have an issue, not enough water and it is a very small percentage… that’s the root cause.

The reason behind the thermal problem is traced back to the insufficient liquid inside the vapor chamber. YouTuber @der8auer EN was one of the first people to suspect the vapor chamber’s faulty design.

AMD and its board partners are now offering replacements for the Made by AMD cards. However, AMD claims to have sufficient replacement units, so the rumors about a shortage are false.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT cards seem to be functioning perfectly, even the custom partner cards are unaffected. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX vapor chamber is responsible for the card’s performance, and AMD is determined to ensure a smooth user experience for its buyers.
