MSI Afterburner Developer’s Payment Stuck due to Ongoing War in Ukraine

MSI Afterburner is one of the most popular tools in the market for discrete GPU overclocking. However, most brands have now started accommodating their own monitoring and simple overclocking software to control GPU functionality. MSI Afterburner project is presumably ‘dead’ as the company faces licensing problems due to ongoing political tensions in Ukraine.

MSI claimed that an ongoing payment issue is a reason for the holdup with the Afterburner project.

Alexey on MSI Afterburner Support

With respect to sanctions, several companies including MSI are now unable to fulfill their duties in accordance with the agreement signed with the Russia-based developer Alexey. However, he is continuing the Afterburner project in his spare time without MSI’s extended support.

“Our product marketing & accounting team are dealing with this problem now. Due to the war, our payment couldn’t transfer to the author’s bank account successfully. We are still keeping in touch with him and figuring out how to solve this”

MSI

MSI continues to list Afterburner as a recommended software for the latest GPUs, including the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. It is not surprising that scammers are trying to clone the software with malware given its immense popularity.

Despite this, MSI continues to preach its usage. However, the company did acknowledge said malpractices in a recent tweet.

MSI’s Tweet and Afterburner Listing

The RivaTuner, which has also been used for GPU overclocking for a while, is safe from these conflicting sanctions since the RivaTuner Statistic Server (RTSS) is not an MSI tool.

Alexey has also promised that this statistics and overlay software will always have his full support. Even 3rd party software using RTSS should not be impacted by any changes.

Alexey has stated that he will continue to uphold the Afterburner project in his free time. However, this means that the progress will be steady. Unfortunately, the sanctions might take hold of prerelease hardware as well as financial compensation.
