In Elden Ring, players can join forces and face enemies together online. However, most Tarnished had to go through the Lands Between on their own while some brought in a friend for company.
Elden Ring’s director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that he is looking at multiplayer games as a source of inspiration. FromSoftware’s Elden Ring has an online element, with a deviated functionality that might be unconventional from the usual multiplayer landscape.
FromSoftware titles follow a standard format where invasions are a staple element. This makes multiplayer experiences such as Bloodborne and Dark Souls a unique treat for players.
Invasions are used in Elden Ring for balancing; solo players will only be invaded by NPCs or after using a specific item. However, two Tarnished definitely have the upper hand over a boss.
I’m not really sure whether this is the latest trend, but the multiplayer elements that in terms of both technology and the game designs, we keep updating.

Miyazaki also mentioned Escape From Tarkov as an intriguing example of multiplayer games. He assessed how the game uses players as “one of the resources for the gameplay.”
Elden Ring has been pretty shielded from cheaters, but AFK farmers caused plague invasions last year. AFK farming is a method used to gain Runes, but it is an inefficient and inconsistent one.
