Cyberpunk 2077 PC’s Ray Tracing Overdrive Mode Turns Out to be Faulty

Cyberpunk 2077 has some of the best visuals ever seen in any game. On top of this, the Ray Tracing Overdrive Mode just adds that special touch. However, it seems like this upgrade is not running as smoothly as anticipated even on high-end systems.

The Ray Tracing Overdrive Mode for Cyberpunk 2077 causes the framerate to drop significantly once the player exits the menu and resumes the game. The system used below is the AMD Ryzen Zen4 and an iGPU with NVIDIA’s ray tracing support.

Another detail to note is that the image quality in the footage is a clear depiction of the game itself. Clearly, the graphics quality has dropped lower than expected.

The Ray Tracing Overdrive Mode was designed to improve visual fidelity using path tracing so that the end result offers better light simulation. In reality, it is doing the opposite with slower FPS and low-quality graphics.

Reddit user @Daniiiiii111 shared an image which showed that the Overdrive mode corrupted the general visuals of Cyberpunk 2077. It is not surprising that the new mode relies heavily on hardware.

Cyberpunk 2077 PC on RT Overdrive Mode

While it was expected that the RT Overdrive Mode for Cyberpunk 2077 would eat up system resources, the fact that even NVIDIA’s latest RTX 4000 series GPUs can’t keep up is a little concerning. This is definitely bad news for those who are playing on a high-end system.

CD Projekt Red is developing multiple projects right now, including a remake of the original Witcher game and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. It might be tricky to come back to sort out this minor RT issue, but this problem will seriously hinder everyone’s gaming experience.

About Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt, based on video game designer Mike Pondsmith’s game series.

Set in a dystopian cyberpunk universe, the player assumes the role of “V,” a mercenary in the fictional Californian city known as “Night City,” where they deal with the fallout from a heist gone wrong that results in an experimental cybernetic “bio-chip” containing an engram of the legendary rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) threatening to slowly overwrite V’s mind; as the story progresses V and Johnny must work together to find a way to be separated and save V’s life.
