Valve Proton 8 Makes Forspoken & Dead Space Remake Playable on Linux

Valve’s Proton allows users to play Windows games on Linux. It’s most popularly used in the Steam Deck, which features a custom SteamOS based on Linux. With the latest update, Valve has now opened up the door to several more golden opportunities.

Valve recently released the Proton 8, its biggest update ever. Games such as Forspoken and Dead Space Remake are now playable on Linux. Users will need a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 support to install this update.

Proton implements the Windows API using Vulkan and other open-source libraries. This makes Windows games playable on Linux without needing a virtual machine or dual-boot setup.

Proton is a part of Valve’s Steam Play feature, so Linux users have access to a large library of Windows games. Here’s the complete list of games that you can play with Proton 8:

  • Forspoken
  • Samurai Maiden
  • Dead Space (2023)
  • Creativerse
  • Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition
  • One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4
  • Atelier Meruru
  • Atelier Lydie & Suelle ~The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings~
  • Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book DX
  • Blue Reflection
  • Atelier Rorona ~The Alchemist of Arland~ DX
  • Disney Dreamlight Valley
  • ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS XIV
  • ToGather:Island
  • WARRIORS OROCHI 3 Ultimate Definitive Edition
  • Exceed – Gun Bullet Children
  • Gungrave G.O.R.E.
  • Chex Quest HD

Steam Deck users can now browse through a collection of at least 3000 games supported through Proton. Proton 8 features improved multi-touch support, force feedback compatibility in Forza Horizon 5 and BeamNG, better ray-tracing functionality in Crysis Remastered, and fixed multiplayer support in Company of Heroes III. These are just a few of the fixes introduced with the new update.

Valve will most likely continue releasing more such updates for Proton in the future since their Steam Deck is directly affected by it. Hopefully, almost all Windows games will be supported by Proton in the near future.
