PlayStation Announces New Handheld Streaming Device Titled “Project Q”

Sony’s PlayStation 2023 Showcase was held on May 24th at 4 pm EST. It gave us a glimpse of upcoming AAA titles as well as fresh indie games. While most of the attention revolved around Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake, not many expected an announcement for a new gaming accessory.

Sony confirmed the new PlayStation handheld device, which has a working title of “Project Q,” during the PlayStation Showcase 2023 event. Players can stream games onto it directly from their PlayStation 5 using Remote Play.

Project Q has an 8-inch HD display screen and will feature all the buttons on PS5’s DualSense controller. Sony CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed that the Project Q is only a supporting device for the PlayStation 5.

Sony also revealed the first official PlayStation-branded gaming earbuds. These can be connected to PS5 consoles, PCs and smartphones via Bluetooth. The earbuds will offer high quality audio during gameplay by delivering lossless audio carried at a lower latency.

With many major games queued up for PlayStation, the Project Q announcement surely comes as a surprise. However, its existence was first spotted back in April. Apparently, the device was initially titled “Q Lite.” Its purpose is to serve as a PlayStation Remote Play device meant for streaming games.

Since the Project Q is only a PlayStation accessory, it would be in vain to expect a device similar to the PlayStation Portable or Vita. Sony is expected to release more details in the coming months. Hopefully, we can see the device in action soon.
